There’s no denying that a curvier, fuller backside is in vogue, and Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) procedures have helped thousands of patients enhance their derriere. But did you know there’s more than one way to achieve a better backside?

Here, the expert team of plastic surgeons at the Swan Center for Plastic Surgery in Atlanta break down the differences between a surgical BBL and an injectable BBL and share their professional insight into the pros and cons of each to help you make an informed decision about which option is right for you.

What is a surgical BBL?

A surgical BBL is a two-part procedure that involves fat transfer. Your surgeon uses liposuction to harvest excess fat from other areas of your body, typically the waist, abdomen, or thighs. This fat is then carefully purified and strategically injected into your buttocks to enhance the size and shape.

Pros of surgical BBLs:

Customizable body contouring. A 2-for-1 option is hard to pass up, especially when you consider the complementary benefits. Liposuction not only provides the fat you need to boost your buttocks, it also offers an opportunity for overall body reshaping by slimming other areas that are generally diet and exercise-resistant.

Noticeable enhancement. A surgical BBL can be tailored to achieve modest enhancements or provide some serious va-va-voom! Your surgeon will discuss your goals and assess your available fat stores to determine how much enhancement is possible.

Long-lasting results. The effects of a surgical BBL are generally permanent because a good portion of the fat transferred to your buttocks becomes a part of your body’s natural tissue. Most patients enjoy their new, shapely seat for many years!

Cons of surgical BBLs:

Requires surgery. Since it’s a surgical procedure, there are potential risks associated with anesthesia and surgery, plus possible complications related to fat transfer. (Choosing a plastic surgeon who specializes in surgical BBLs greatly reduces the chance that you’ll experience adverse effects and betters your chances of achieving beautiful BBL results.)

Considerable recovery process: Post-operative recovery can be a bit daunting and may require a significant time investment for healing. This isn’t because a surgical BBL is particularly invasive, but rather to ensure optimal results; you’ll have restrictions on sitting and lying down for about 6 weeks to prevent the pressure of your body weight from negatively affecting the shape of your newly enhanced buttocks.

Initially tentative results: There’s no way to know for sure how much injected fat will stay where your surgeon places it; about 20-40% is reabsorbed by your body. Your surgeon will likely harvest and inject more fat than necessary to achieve your results to account for this factor. Diminishing fat stores may cause asymmetry or dents; some patients will want a secondary “touch up” BBL procedure to add more volume and smooth imperfections.

When performed by a BBL specialist, both a surgical and non-surgical BBL can safely achieve an alluring silhouette.

What is an injectable BBL?

The injectable BBL is a non-surgical alternative to the traditional BBL that uses injectable fillers to enhance the shape and volume of the buttocks. Two popular products used in this procedure are Radiesse® and Sculptra®, which stimulate natural collagen production in your skin to gradually improve the size and shape of your buttocks over time.

Pros of injectable BBLs:

No surgery or downtime required. An injectable BBL avoids the scars and potential risks associated with surgery. You can typically resume your normal activities immediately after the procedure; most appointments take under an hour!

Conservative results. The increased collagen stores will add subtle volume over several weeks, mimicking the booty-boosting effects that you might experience with exercise. This means it will not be evident you’ve just had a procedure to help sculpt a rounder, fuller buttocks.

No minimum body fat requirement. There’s a chance that if you lack volume in your buttocks, you may not have much to spare elsewhere on your body. The good news is an injectable BBL can help naturally thin patients add natural-looking curvature to their bottom half!

Cons of injectable BBLs:

Temporary results. The results of an injectable BBL typically last between one to two years. Your individual results will depend on the product used and your body’s response.

Multiple treatments. Most patients need 2 or more treatments to achieve optimal results, and you’ll need to schedule regular touch-up injections to maintain them.

So, which one is right for you?

The first step in deciding which gluteal enhancement option is right for you is to have an in-depth consultation with an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon who is highly experienced in both procedures. They will consider your personal goals, anatomy, and lifestyle to guide you in the decision-making process and develop a personalized treatment plan to achieve the level of enhancement you’re looking for.

Schedule your BBL consultation at the Swan Center for Plastic Surgery in Atlanta

As your big day approaches, it’s essential to feel like the most confident and radiant version of yourself. At the Swan Center in Atlanta, we are here to meet your unique skincare needs as a bride-to-be! Whether you want to finally address dark spots or acne, or you are simply looking to enhance your already gorgeous canvas, our team of experienced estheticians and expert injectors are prepared to advise you on the optimal treatment to meet your goals.

Below, we discuss our favorite non-surgical treatments and how to get the timing right before showers, the bachelorette trip, and the big day itself.

Facial treatments for brides

Our treatments are specially tailored to your skin concerns, offering solutions to everything from acne to fine lines. Here are some of our favorite treatments for brides-to-be:

Botox-type injectables (neurotoxins)

Botox, Dysport, and other neuromodulators are injected into muscles (usually on the upper face around the eyes, forehead, and eyebrows) to pause nerve signals and soften the wrinkles that come from dynamic facial expressions. These treatments are quick, nearly painless, and require no downtime, making them perfect for busy brides!

If you are able, it is ideal to establish a treatment regimen (every 3-4 months) with your injector well in advance to fine-tune your results and make sure you are happy with them for your big day. Schedule your final pre-wedding Botox injections at least 2 weeks in advance to allow ample time for any bruising to subside.

Dermal fillers

Dermal fillers (you’ve probably heard of Restylane or Juvéderm®) are designed to restore volume, reduce the appearance of lines, and enhance features such as cheeks and lips. Dermal fillers can cause some temporary swelling or bruising, so it’s best to schedule this treatment at least 1 month prior to your wedding. This allows plenty of time for any minor side effects to subside, as well as to adjust your results if needed. That said, if you have never tried fillers before, start as much as a year before your nuptials to give yourself time to try different options and fully refine your look.

Learn about lip augmentation with filler »

Microneedling & RF microneedling

Microneedling, or collagen induction therapy, dramatically reduces acne scars and fine lines while improving skin texture and imparting a noticeable glow. If you want to see a big change, starting treatments six months in advance yields the most transformative results. RF microneedling uses radiofrequency to double up on the skin tightening transformation of microneedling, and does not always require repeat treatments.

As your skin will need time to heal and generate new collagen, schedule your last microneedling treatment at least 1 month before your wedding. If you’re planning a series of treatments for optimal results, start 3-6 months in advance and space each session about a month apart.

Chemical peels

Chemical peels are much less scary than they sound! We apply a custom solution containing ingredients like glycolic acid in high concentrations, then gently wash it away after a certain amount of time. This can smooth your skin out while improving any lines or wrinkles and promoting a nice, even skin texture. Peels can also help with dark spots or hyperpigmentation. To see full results, we recommend starting a series of at least 3 peels beginning a little over 12 weeks before your wedding day.

Hydrafacial

For a “your skin but better” look—especially if you struggle with breakouts!—start monthly Hydrafacials several months before the big day. These gentle facials can be customized with LED light and active ingredients, but every Hydrafacial uses a water vortex to extract pores and create a glowing complexion. You’ll see an instant glow after your Hydrafacial, so you may even consider a treatment the day before engagement photos or the wedding itself!

Whether you are the bride, a bridesmaid, or a proud mother-of-the-bride or -groom, our treatments and services are designed to enhance your natural beauty.

Broadband light therapy

If your wedding skin goal is more balanced tone and color, broadband light (BBL) therapy addresses acne discoloration, sun damage, signs of aging, redness, and freckles! Start BBL treatments at least 4 months before events so that you can plan for 3 to 5 treatments, spaced about 3 weeks apart.

Body contouring medspa treatments

Injectable butt lift

At our medspa, we are huge fans of a totally non-surgical injectable butt lift with Sculptra, a long-lasting dermal filler that is a less invasive alternative to a Brazilian butt lift (BBL) surgery. With zero downtime, our injectors can sculpt improved projection, more volume, and more shapely buttocks to help you fill out your white dress with natural-looking hourglass curves. Your booty grows over time after this treatment, so it’s best to start at least 6 months prior to your wedding day. Results last 2 years or more!

Vaginal rejuvenation with O-Shot and ThermiVa

For a bride, confidence on her wedding day is paramount! Vaginal rejuvenation focuses on the appearance and function of the vagina and vulva, helping to enhance sexual satisfaction or to address issues with laxity, dryness, and urinary incontinence.

Our ThermiVa technology uses radiofrequency energy to gently heat tissues without discomfort or downtime. This treatment promotes collagen production and tightens the skin over the course of about 3 sessions spaced across 12 weeks. For full effects before the wedding day, begin your rejuvenation journey several months before the date! We also offer the O-shot to double down on results; it can be safely paired with other treatments or used alone.

If you’re considering breast implant removal, you likely have numerous questions! The answer to the question of whether or not an explantation procedure is right for you is certainly a personal one—but it’s best to make the decision with counseling from a board-certified plastic surgeon.

Our Swan Center plastic surgeons have decades of combined knowledge on the subject and are here to explain some of the most critical things to consider when making this important decision about your body. Below, we’re covering the reasons certain patients may choose to reverse their “boob job,” plus what happens during the surgery and after, to help you decide if it’s time to speak with a plastic surgeon.

What are some reasons to have breast implants removed?

Patients may seek out breast explantation (another term for implant removal) because of personal preference, a change in their breasts’ appearance, to treat a complication, or for other health-related reasons.

Following are some of the specific scenarios that may lead you to want to have your breast implants taken out:

Personal preference or lifestyle

Rupture and/or deflation

Capsular contracture

Health concerns

Cosmetic changes

Aesthetic irregularities

Time since your implants were placed

Personal preference or lifestyle

Many breast implant removals boil down to personal choice. It’s completely normal to have your breasts implants out because they aren’t a good fit for your lifestyle, or you prefer to have your natural breast size and/or shape again! Some patients feel their breasts are too heavy, or their tastes have changed and they want a more natural aesthetic.

Rupture and/or deflation

A ruptured breast implant is an implant that has torn or developed a hole in the outer silicone shell. With saline-filled implants, you will typically notice that your implant has deflated: the saline (salt water) leaks out and is safely absorbed by the body. This is a common reason patients decide to have a breast explant since deflated implants change the appearance of your breast(s).

With the modern cohesive silicone gel-filled implants, however, a rupture can be asymptomatic—it usually doesn’t change your breasts’ appearance, and therefore can only be detected with an MRI or ultrasound scan, which (as of 2022) are recommended by the FDA after 5-6 years, with check-ups every 2-3 years thereafter. If a rupture is detected, then the compromised silicone implant should be removed or replaced because the silicone inside the implant is not meant to be exposed inside the body, and may interact with lymph nodes or surrounding tissues.

Capsular contracture

Capsular contracture develops when the capsule of scar tissue that naturally forms around an implant irregularly tightens and hardens, distorting the shape of your breast(s). There are several Baker grades of capsular contracture severity, and some scientists believe it may be caused by a bacterial biofilm that forms on the implant. To treat capsular contracture, some patients may choose explantation with capsulectomy (scar tissue removal), while many patients opt to replace their implants in order to restore their breasts to their previous augmented look (this option comes with a risk of recurrence, but surgeons have various techniques to help minimize the risk).

Health concerns

Breast implants have been the subject of ongoing studies exploring their connection with certain health conditions. Breast implant illness, or BII, refers to the experience of systemic symptoms like hair loss, memory loss, rash, brain fog, or fatigue that are thought to be caused by breast implants. BII is a diagnosis of exclusion, meaning that patients work with their providers to eliminate other possible causes of their symptoms before arriving at a diagnosis of BII. Research is currently underway to better understand BII, but currently BII is not a diagnosable condition. To alleviate symptoms, explantation surgery may be chosen as a treatment option.

Nothing is more important than our commitment to the safety of our patients. We proudly offer MENTOR® implants for our breast augmentation patients, which have an extensive warranty program and a high standard of quality and safety. MENTOR® has conducted decades worth of clinical studies to closely monitor long-term breast implant complications, which is why we trust using these implants for our patients.

Cosmetic changes

With aging, childbearing, and weight changes, the breasts’ appearance is likely to change. You may decide you want a change in the shape or size of your breasts with a revision cosmetic surgery, or simply to have your implants taken out—we understand! Whether you want to add a breast lift to your breast implant removal for a perkier appearance or you opt for a simple removal surgery, cosmetic change is a normal reason to seek an explant.

Aesthetic irregularities

Aesthetic complications include visible implant rippling, implant malposition, or asymmetry of your results, and any of these may lead you to decide to remove your implants. An experienced cosmetic breast surgeon can also help you to restore a natural-looking breast shape and size with a customized combination of procedures like breast lift to address breast ptosis and fat transfer to the breasts to add a small amount of volume and upper pole fullness, as needed.

Time since your implants were placed

Time passed since getting your implants is another reason: according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) and other experts, breast implants are not lifetime medical devices and may need replacement or removal after 10-15 years. That said, if you are happy with your look and aren’t experiencing a complication, there is no need to have your implants out within a specific time frame.

Alternatives to breast implant removal

As an alternative to explantation, breast implant revision with implant replacement is an option if you still want the look of implants: many patients switch to newer-generation silicone gel breast implants which are very durable, safe, and natural-feeling. You can also choose implant revision surgery instead of removal if you have a complication, such as capsular contracture, that needs to be treated.

It’s completely normal to have your breasts implants out because they aren’t a good fit for your lifestyle, or you prefer to have your natural breast size and/or shape again!

Most explants involve more than just removing implants

Breast implant removal is performed under general anesthesia, and uses the same incision or incisions (if possible) used during your initial breast augmentation. However, implant removal typically involves more than just taking out the implants: depending on the state of your implants and any complications you may have, the capsule of scar tissue may need to be removed partially or completely in a procedure known as “capsulectomy.” Here are the capsulectomy options to discuss with your board-certified plastic surgeon during your consultation:

En bloc capsulectomy

In an en bloc capsulectomy, your surgeon removes the implant and the surrounding capsule of scar tissue in one unit. This technique may be necessary if the implant poses a health risk if exposed to the surrounding tissues. Still, it should only be used when critical to the patient’s health as en bloc capsulectomy can notably increase the risk of damage to surrounding tissues.

Total capsulectomy

A total capsulectomy involves first opening the implant capsule and removing the implant, then removing all of the capsule tissue second to that (sometimes in separate pieces). This is a somewhat less risky procedure than en bloc capsulectomy, yet still requires the surgeon to be vigilant working around surrounding tissues.

Partial capsulectomy

A partial capsulectomy involves removing any problematic portions of the scar capsule tissue that could inhibit a good outcome. The surgeon will leave any part of the capsule that is deemed risky to remove.

Ultimately, which type of capsulectomy is best suited to treating your anatomy and concerns can only be determined in an in-person consultation. Your plastic surgeon will explain which options will be effective and safe based on your reasons for seeking an explant surgery.

You may also want a breast lift or fat transfer—here’s why

A breast lift is a plastic surgery that tightens stretched tissues, removes any excess skin that is contributing to sagging or drooping, and creates a firmer, lifted breast shape. It can also move the nipples higher on the breast mound, if needed, to help your breasts look more youthful.

This 39-year-old Swan Center patient is shown before and after breast implant removal and breast lift. To see more photos, please visit our photo gallery.

Since having large breast implants, pregnancy, weight changes, and aging can all contribute to stretched breast tissues, it’s fairly common to need a breast lift to restore an aesthetically pleasing breast shape after breast implant removal. We can perform a breast lift in the same surgery, under the same anesthesia as your explantation procedure, in most cases. Including a breast lift adds 1-2 hours to the total procedure time.

Additionally, a fat transfer to the breasts is a procedure that can add a modest amount of volume and shape, as well as help to provide volume where needed in a customized fashion. Fat transfer may even be able to help you to restore some degree of cleavage or upper-pole fullness.

That said, patients with minimal stretching of breast tissue can take a “wait and see” approach, having their breast implants removed first, then deciding later if they are happy with their breast shape. Our surgeons will be sure to educate you on any options that may provide a pleasing outcome and will support your ultimate decision, developing a tailored procedure plan.

Your breasts’ appearance after explantation

Your breast will lose volume and fullness after your implants are taken out, but they will likely still have a familiar shape to you. It’s common for patients to be worried about their breasts’ appearance after an explant, but for most, there is some amount of “bounce back” that you can expect to see over time as your breast skin adjusts to not having implants. Talk with your surgeon about these concerns, and based on your own anatomy, they can help you decide if an additional procedure like breast lift may truly be necessary (or not!) to help you see a result you love after surgery.

Over the past few years, collagen supplements and bone broth have surged in popularity thanks to their potential health and appearance benefits. So, which is the better option for enhancing your natural beauty? As it turns out, both collagen and bone broth can provide essential support for your skin, nails, and hair—but there are differences that may make one a better choice than the other for you.

Here, we look at collagen supplements and bone broth in more detail so you decide which one is the most beneficial option to support your unique beauty needs.

What is collagen?

Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body and is a crucial component of skin, bone, cartilage, tendons, and ligaments—providing strength and structure to keep them healthy and supple. Collagen contains four powerhouse amino acids: glycine, proline, hydroxyproline, and arginine, which are fundamental to your skin’s health and appearance as they support elasticity and avert wrinkling.

These amino acids also help increase bone strength & density and reduce inflammation to improve joint health. Additionally, collagen promotes gut health by improving digestion and relieving associated symptoms, such as bloating.

Collagen vs. bone broth

As we age, our body naturally produces less collagen. Taking collagen supplements or consuming bone broth with high collagen content may be helpful in replenishing lost collagen levels, potentially leading to improved skin elasticity, fewer wrinkles, and a bit more confidence when we look in the mirror.

There are key differences between a collagen supplement and bone broth, and depending on your goals, you may prefer one option over the other to bolster your beauty routine.

How collagen powder is made

Collagen powder is made from animal bones, skin, and connective tissue; most manufactured collagen is bovine in origin. The process begins with breaking down the animal parts—through boiling or other methods such as acid hydrolysis or enzymatic hydrolysis. The resulting mixture is then filtered and purified before being dried and ground into a fine powder, which can then be used as-is or further processed to create different types of collagen supplements.

How bone broth is made

Bone broth is made by simmering bones—as well as optional aromatics including vegetables, herbs, and spices—in water for an extended period of time. This process naturally extracts the bones’ vitamins, minerals, and amino acids into the liquid. The end result is a flavorful broth that can be used as a base for soups and sauces, or enjoyed on its own.

Taking collagen supplements or consuming bone broth with high collagen content may be helpful in replenishing lost collagen levels.

Bone broth: benefits and drawbacks

Bone broth has been used for centuries as a healing remedy, and its benefits are recognized by modern science.

Bone broth benefits

The benefits of bone broth are more comprehensive than a simple collagen supplement;

Bone broth contains a range of minerals including calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, silicon, sulfur, and trace minerals that can help support overall health.

Bone broth is naturally high in unprocessed collagen, which helps to promote healthy joints and improve skin health and elasticity.

Bone broth is a satisfying food to consume and can support healthy weight loss

Bone broth can aid in recovery from surgery or injury due to its ability to reduce inflammation and promote the healing of soft tissues.

Bone broth may be more cost-effective and can be made at home using simple ingredients like bones and vegetables.

Bone broth is relatively versatile in the kitchen.

Bone broth drawbacks

On the downside;

Bone broth may be difficult to digest for some people, especially if fat content has not been removed in a second step after cooking.

Bone broth can be time-consuming to make at home.

Pre-made bone broth products save time but can be pricey.

Collagen supplements: benefits and drawbacks

Collagen has become increasingly popular as an added ingredient in skincare products due to its ability to help keep skin, hair, nails, and other connective tissues healthy.

Collagen supplement benefits

There are various benefits to taking a collagen supplement;

Collagen supplements deliver a concentrated dose of protein and are highly versatile—they can be consumed internally in tablets, capsules, or in liquid or powdered forms.

Collagen powder is tasteless and won’t alter the flavor of your food. It can be easily added to yogurt, smoothies, coffee—nearly any dish or beverage.

Collagen supplements may be more accessible for some people, whether taken orally or added to food.

You can easily consume a precise, doctor-recommended dose of collagen each day to support healthy body functions, skin elasticity, etc.

Collagen supplement drawbacks

On the downside, collagen supplements are heavily processed, using enzymes to isolate the collagen molecules from the original animal parts; isolated nutritional components do not typically offer the same range of benefits as less-processed or whole foods. Also, supplements are not regulated by the FDA, meaning consumers must trust the manufacturer to test for the safety and efficacy of their product.

We have a winner! Well, sort of…

In sum, bone broth has additional nutrients not provided by isolated collagen supplements and thus may be a superior choice for improving your overall health and wellness—that said, convenience is also important, and your personal preferences will have the final say in which one is the better beauty booster for you!

The fine print

Unless you actually make or purchase bone broth frequently enough to regularly incorporate it into your diet, you will likely get more dependable beauty benefits from taking a daily collagen supplement. That’s because consistency is key to improving your skin, whether you are using professional-grade skincare products or increasing your collagen intake. Some people may find that taking a collagen supplement is simply more convenient and allows for more consistent use than drinking or cooking with bone broth. Ultimately, the right choice is the product you will use the most consistently!

Want to boost your skin today? Let us help!

While consuming collagen can provide nutritional support when it comes to skin health, its action is subtle and takes time. Collagen supplements also can’t erase past sun damage, wrinkles, and other skin flaws—laser treatments and other non-surgical methodologies are much more effective when it comes to quickly improving the surface appearance of your skin. The outstanding medical team at The Swan Center is here to help you with the best non-surgical cosmetic treatments, including options that are proven to boost your natural collagen production and improve your skin’s appearance, such as RF microneedling, chemical peels, laser treatments, and specialty facials.
We often meet patients who tell us, simply, “Botox me!” While the answer is usually an enthusiastic “You got it!,” Botox® is best for certain dynamic wrinkles, and there are actually a number of highly effective wrinkle treatments that we can use to give you a personalized, optimal result. As a nurse injector in Atlanta, I always customize a plan based on each type of wrinkle you want to treat! Here’s everything in our arsenal, plus your treatment options by the area.

Medical-grade wrinkle treatments

Wrinkle reduction can involve a range of treatments, and not every wrinkle requires an injectable. From facial treatments that improve skin quality to skincare you use at home, we believe in a complementary anti-aging approach using tools like:

Laser treatments, peels, and facials like chemical peels, microneedling, Hydrafacial®, and laser peels are effective anti-aging options for combating fine lines and improving overall skin quality. Each year, I receive a HALO Laser Treatment to boost collagen deep in the dermis, which is literally what prevents wrinkles.

Botox-type injectable neurotoxins like Botox® and Dysport® treat dynamic wrinkles, especially in the upper face. I use Botox to preserve youthfulness or to slow the signs of aging, or even if you want to smooth or soften existing lines! I take a unique approach to treatment plans for each individual, because no two faces are the same. With consistent treatments, neurotoxin patients will be so happy with the investment they make in their skin—after treatment AND long term!

Dermal fillers like Juvéderm® and Restylane® treat dynamic and static wrinkles, especially naso-labial folds and marionette lines below the corners of the mouth. Filler is an AMAZING tool to soften lines and restore volume. By using a hyaluronic acid based dermal filler, the boost and glow your skin will achieve is absolutely stunning!

Medical-grade skincare is a critical part of our arsenal for supporting your in-office treatments with an effective, wrinkle-fighting skincare regimen at home. Skin care is the security for your investment: In-office treatments are amazing, but if you don’t have a daily regimen at home, then you are not fighting wrinkles at max capacity! 70% of your anti-aging routine is at home with a curated medical grade routine, and then 30% stems from in-office procedures.

Dynamic vs. static wrinkles

The first thing to know about wrinkles before I select a treatment is that they can be either dynamic or static. Dynamic lines appear when you’re smiling, frowning, squinting, or making other facial expressions. Static wrinkles are etched into the skin, even when your face is at rest, and tend to form in your thirties or later as your body’s production of collagen and elastin (the building blocks of plump, elastic skin) begins to diminish.

Each type of wrinkle, depending on its location in the face or neck, calls for a different anti-aging approach. Most dynamic wrinkles respond best to Botox-type injectables, although some (namely the nasolabial folds) can be treated with filler. However, once wrinkles become static, they usually require filler, laser treatments, and/or a surgical lifting procedure to reverse. Both dynamic and static wrinkles, in any area of the face or neck, can also benefit from skin resurfacing facials and a medical grade skin care routine.

I always customize a plan based on each type of wrinkle you want to treat!

Wrinkle formation and treatment, by the area

Here’s how wrinkles form in the key areas of the face, and my go-tos for smoothing them out:

Forehead

Horizontal forehead wrinkles are caused by movement of the frontalis muscle, especially when raising the brows; these lines can deepen with sun damage. Treat forehead lines with neuromodulators like Botox or Dysport. For best results, relax these muscles early to slow wrinkles’ formation!

Frown lines (between the eyebrows)

The “11”-shaped lines that form between the eyebrows are the original territory of our faithful friend Botox. Injected into the muscles below the inner eyebrows that pull your brow down into a frown, neurotoxin stops those lines from frowning, allowing the skin to smooth itself out.

Crow’s feet (eyes)

These lines emanate from the edges of your eyes when smiling or squinting, and may be made worse by sun exposure—so always wear a good pair of sunglasses, in addition to sunscreen and a hat! Botox is highly effective for crow’s feet, and it’s a good idea to pair it with a topical medical-grade eye cream to reduce the appearance of these fine lines.

Nasolabial folds

These folds that extend from the nose to the outside corners of the mouth, framing your smile, are often caused by movement when smiling. Some people are genetically predisposed to have deep nasolabial folds because of their inherited anatomy. The best way to treat nasolabial folds is with dermal fillers like Restylane Lyft, which can be injected deeply in the dermis and also in the more shallow epidermis layer to “fill” the wrinkles and soften their appearance.

Lips

Wrinkles in and around the lips form due to drinking through straws, smoking, general volume loss over time, and even movement as you talk. To treat wrinkles here, we typically use lip fillers to replace lost volume and smooth perioral lines (a.k.a. smoker’s lines). We can also use a small amount of Botox above the upper lip to soften the muscle and allow the upper lip to curl outward with a technique commonly called the “lip flip.”

Neck

In the neck, you may see horizontal lines that form from looking down at your phone or computer (tech neck), as well as vertical platysmal band lines that become distinct due to thinning skin. To improve the texture of thin, delicate neck skin, RF microneedling and laser skin resurfacing are effective options. To address the vertical bands, Botox can be injected to soften the muscles that cause them. And when sagging tissues in the lower face and neck have progressed beyond the power of non-surgical treatments, a facelift and/or neck lift with one of our Atlanta plastic surgeons is the ultimate neck rejuvenation procedure.

Prevent wrinkles with good choices, skincare, and Botox-type injectables

There are a handful of proven ways to stop wrinkles from worsening: Botox or Dysport can be injected preventatively to stop dynamic wrinkles from forming in the first place. Protect skin from sun exposure with sunscreen, hats, seeking shade, and wearing sunglasses! You can counter the very real effects of air pollution on skin aging by applying antioxidants, such as Vitamin C, in your skincare routine. And products like retinol (tretinoin) are highly effective when used as directed. Most importantly, make good choices: eat a nutrient-dense diet, and get regular exercise and quality sleep!

Schedule your appointment with one of our expert nurse injectors at The Swan Center for Plastic Surgery. Our team of Expert Injectors, our aestheticians, and our Atlanta plastic surgeons are here to make treating your wrinkles as effective and efficient as possible, with a full range of injectables, skin treatments, and plastic surgery offerings—including minimally invasive alternatives! Forget about the old standbys (apple picking, corn mazes, pumpkin patches, and haunted houses) this season because we’ve rounded up a list of our favorite unique and off-beat activities to explore with your SO, family, and besties!

Bike the Beltline

Peep the leaves, enjoy the fall breeze, and check out some amazing public art installations with a weekend bike ride along the Beltline. The city’s 22-mile-long greenway and trail system is constructed on former railroad corridors connecting 45 neighborhoods across the city. If you don’t have your own bike you can visit the Atlanta Bicycle Barn or Atlanta Beltline Bicycle for a wide selection of bike trailers, tandem bikes, and cruisers for rent!

All-Inclusive Adventures

About an hour’s drive from Atlanta is the Historic Banning Mills, an adventure resort where you can get your adrenaline fix AND have a peaceful nature retreat all-in-one. Soar through the trees on the world’s largest zip line, climb the tallest free-standing rock wall or stick to lower elevations with horseback riding, kayaking, ATVs, and other ways to explore the protected ecosystems of the Snake Creek Gorge.

Attend a Pow Wow

Mark your calendars for early November for the Native American Festival and Pow Wow at Stone Mountain, the largest of its kind in the state. Here you can explore indigenous culture and traditions through dance, music, crafts, cooking, storytelling and a variety of interactive, hands-on experiences. Making memories for the future while honoring the heritage of the past—we can’t think of anything better!

Show-Stopping Fun

The Center for Puppetry Arts is the nation’s largest organization dedicated to the art form of puppetry. The museum is located in Midtown, the city’s art district, and focuses on three areas of puppetry: performance, education and history. This fall, guests have the opportunity to see adorable puppet shows including How to Snag a Sea Monster and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. Don’t forget to check out the Museum Store for a wide selection of unique and educational gifts for all ages—it’s the perfect place for knocking out some holiday shopping!

Treetop Hideaway

Looking for a unique staycation within Atlanta city limits? At the Alpaca Treehouse you can fulfill a childhood fantasy by sleeping in a treehouse. This enchanting hideaway, constructed solely from reclaimed, salvaged, and other sustainable materials, is hidden within a dense bamboo forest. But that’s not all! BBL is highly customizable and does not have to be used to create extreme, trendy results that may not stand the test of time. We believe that while the “moment” of over-the-top Kardashian booties might be over, proportionate buttock enhancement will always be in style.

At The Swan Center for Plastic Surgery in Atlanta, we frequently see patients looking for a naturally curvier figure, rounder derriere, or better butt projection. Buttock enhancement is a wonderful procedure for balancing body proportions and emphasizing hourglass curves (which never go out of style). We perform two kinds of buttock enhancement—BBL via fat transfer and non-surgical injectable butt lifts, giving our patients more options to fit their lifestyle and their goals.

Buttock enhancement is a key body contouring tool for plastic surgeons

Our Atlanta board certified plastic surgeons believe a tailored procedure plan including buttock enhancement can help create an ideal shape when upper and lower body proportions are not harmonious. While subtractive procedures like liposuction can somewhat rebalance the figure, an additive procedure like BBL beautifully magnifies contours.

Safely performed, buttock augmentation is often an essential option for patients who desire a more shapely lower body.

Keep in mind that plastic surgeons are “agnostic” when it comes to procedure popularity and think instead of the overall shape the individual patient wishes to achieve. To create a complete result, plastic surgeons may also reach for a range of body contouring techniques, including tummy tuck, and other lifting options, like arm lift. These procedures have remained popular for years on end because they are proven to help patients modify their shape and counteract the effects of childbearing, weight loss, or aging. We believe that BBL is also part of the canon of classic cosmetic procedures.

Like any body contouring procedure, buttock enhancement can be a key tool for plastic surgeons to help patients meet their goals. Here at the Swan Center, we will continue to offer buttock augmentation as an option as long as our patients continue to seek a more hourglass shape or voluminous, projected buttocks.

You have options: BBL surgery vs. non-surgical butt lift

Brazilian butt lift (BBL, or fat transfer to the buttocks)

Fat transfer to the buttocks, a.k.a. BBL, is a surgical buttock augmentation that takes place in two parts. First, liposuction is used on the waist, flanks, abdomen, or thighs to harvest fat. Then, the fat is placed carefully below the skin of the buttocks to enhance their projection and shape.

Real patient shown 6 weeks After 360 degree liposuction with fat transfer to the buttocks.

Benefits of a surgical BBL include:

A long-lasting solution in a single procedure

A comprehensive body contouring outcome, since liposuction of the waist (for example) is used to slim nearby features and help enhance the apparent projection of buttocks

While a traditional Brazilian butt lift (BBL) is a powerful procedure, it also involves liposuction, a surgery usually performed under general anesthesia. This makes BBL best for patients who are looking for customized liposuction to reduce fat in other areas of the body, in addition to more volume in the buttocks. There are some risks associated with the BBL, and technique is absolutely critical to safety—so be sure to choose an experienced, board certified plastic surgeon who uses proven fat transfer techniques, operates in an accredited facility, and has a reputation for being patient-oriented in their care.

Injectable butt lift (non-surgical)

This buttock augmentation is performed with injectable products that help stimulate collagen production to gain desired enhancement. Our Atlanta plastic surgeons and Master Injectors use the products Radiesse® and Sculptra®, both of which are long-lasting formulas (up to 2 years after your final treatment). They work by increasing natural collagen production in your skin to offer even more improvement over time. This achieves gorgeous results without surgery, and without significant downtime.

28-year-old patient shown before & after 3 Sculptra Butt Lift Treatments at The Swan Center.

An injectable butt lift is perfect for either dramatic or more subtle enhancements: our expert providers fully customize each treatment to your desired shape, volume, and projection. Plus, the results are not permanent but last up to about 2 years, so you can easily personalize the amount of “bubble” or projection by deciding when to return for periodic touch-ups.

At The Swan Center, our experienced team of providers is here to help you look refreshed if you find that stress has taken a toll on your skin, but we also acknowledge the importance of managing stress and caring for yourself first and foremost.

In this blog, we take a look at how stress ages your skin and what you can do to help manage it. Your body and skin will thank you—inside and out!

Stress and Skin Aging

An important player in whether or not your body feels stressed is the hormone cortisol, a naturally occurring steroid. Sound familiar? That’s because cortisol is produced in response to stress and activates our “fight or flight” instincts. According to the Mayo Clinic, cortisol also “curbs functions that would be nonessential or harmful in a fight-or-flight situation.” Unfortunately, this includes lowering your body’s natural production of hyaluronic acid and collagen, key substances for keeping the skin plump and hydrated. Without an adequate supply of them, your skin thins and appears to age faster. Furthermore, high cortisol levels limit your body’s ability to fight internal inflammation and heal itself.

High cortisol levels limit your body’s ability to fight internal inflammation and heal itself.

Studies have shown that chronic stress may additionally lead to the development of insulin resistance, which can then cause higher levels of blood sugar that then contributes to glycation. Glycation can hinder your skin’s elasticity, thus contributing to wrinkles and premature aging.

The good news? There are some proven ways to manage stress that can be done anywhere and cost nothing!

3 every-day tips for managing stress

Lowering stress might seem like an impossible task in a world that can often feel out of control. However, a great amount of the stress that we feel is not caused by the stressor itself, but how we deal with that stressor. Doing yoga in the morning won’t end the world’s problems, but it will help you have the energy and health to be present for yourself and those around you.

Here are three ways to lower stress in your life, which can lead to healthier skin and a healthier you:

1. Exercise

Exercise increases antioxidants and lowers those damaging cortisol levels. Medical professionals everywhere recommend 30 minutes to an hour of exercise per day.

The Mayo Clinic heartily acknowledges the stress-reducing effects of exercise. With regular exercise you get an increase in endorphins, which helps your body learn to manage the fight or flight response, while also improving your overall physical and mental health.

2. Mindfully relax

Meditation has a myriad of beneficial effects to help you reduce and control stress. A 2019 study on college students found that “adopting a mindfulness practice for as little as once per week may reduce stress and anxiety.” And a 2020 study found that older adults who had consistent physical exercise and mental training (such as meditation) routines experienced better health and a higher quality of life.

Looking specifically at potential benefits for skin, a 2021 overview of mind/body therapies as dermatologic treatment strategies found that options including meditation “have been evaluated in the treatment of skin disease and have shown some benefits.”

Not into formal meditation? Instead, you can just mindfully breathe! Research from Harvard Medical School shows that taking slow, deep breaths triggers our relaxation response—which can help our bodies stop releasing cortisol and blocking the physical functions we need to keep our skin healthy and young.

The Swan Center’s Nurse Injector Jordan Dupree, BSN is a big fan of taking a little “me time” every single day. As a busy, working mother of two, she wants to remind us all it’s okay to take care of yourself, especially in times of stress. She offered a great tip for those short on time: your daily skincare routine can become a meditation. Make it a time to peacefully set all other thoughts aside, and focus on breathing deeply and lovingly caring for your appearance. As you cleanse and apply products to your skin, use gentle, consistent motions that feel soothing and impart a feeling of relaxation.

Nurse Injector Jordan Dupree, BSN offered a great tip for those short on time: your daily skincare routine can become a meditation.

3. Don’t check your email after work hours

For many of us, work/life balance has suffered in recent years—the accessibility of email on our phones, working from home, and other factors can make it a struggle to define the end of the work day. Yet it is important to guard your personal time and get a definitive break from the stress of work. According to Science Daily, “those who have greater ‘boundary control’ over their work and personal lives were better at creating a stress buffer that helped protect them from falling into a negative-rumination trap.”

Working after hours can even affect the health of those around you: a 2018 study found that after-hour email expectations had a negative effect on employees and their spouse’s well-being. It’s an urgent enough health issue that certain European countries have implemented policies to protect citizens from overwork, supporting a human “right to disconnect.” Germany imposed guidelines in 2013, France took action in 2017, and Portugal passed measures in 2021 to help improve the mental and physical health of working people—all of which discourage bosses from contacting their employees after work hours.

The Mayo Clinic suggests setting boundaries to keep a good work-life balance which includes not checking your work email in the evenings or over the weekend. Your schedule may differ, but the takeaway here is to define hours that you are not available for work matters, allowing yourself time to decompress.

The latest tech gives you options to dramatically improve your skin while minimizing downtime and side effects.

To ensure you get the best results, though, it’s important to know how to care for your skin post treatment! In this blog, we’ll orient you to the basics of laser skin resurfacing, then share 5 things to help you get the most out of your laser treatment.

What does laser skin resurfacing do?

Cosmetic lasers use light-based technology to improve the look of your skin in an outpatient, non-surgical procedure. They can be used to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, scars, pigmented lesions, keratoses, and uneven tone or texture. They also help to tighten the skin.

Laser treatment does carefully-controlled damage to your skin in order to take advantage of its healing mechanisms.

Laser treatments typically work by damaging skin is a highly-targeted way to stimulate the skin’s own healing and rejuvenation process. Lasers can also reach deeper layers to promote the formation of new collagen—that’s the component of your skin that gives it elasticity and keeps it plump and hydrated.

What is recovery like after laser treatment?

Laser resurfacing procedures vary widely and are finely-tuned to the individual patient’s needs, which means recovery will look different for each person.

For more mild treatments, you’ll likely experience some redness and sensitivity that will subside after only a few days. More aggressive treatments can offer dramatic results, but do require a longer recovery time, during which you may experience peeling skin as the dead outer layer is shed.

In either case, by the time two weeks have gone by you should be seeing the results in younger, healthier-looking skin.

Tips for a successful treatment

So what can you do to make sure you get the best results from your laser skin resurfacing treatment? Here are our top 5 tips.

1. Prepare for success

What you do before your treatment matters, too. One area you particularly need to watch out for is the sun. Even though it can be tempting to get outside and enjoy the weather, it’s best to avoid sun exposure for at least a week before your procedure.

You should also avoid anything that would be harsh on your skin, like chemical peels. Laser treatment makes your skin very sensitive and you don’t want to head into treatment with it already irritated.

It’s also a good idea to stay on top of hydration and healthy eating—your skin needs plenty of water and nutrients to generate more collagen and reap the full benefits of laser treatment!

2. Post treatment, focus on being gentle & clean

Laser treatment does carefully-controlled damage to your skin in order to take advantage of its healing mechanisms. You don’t want to put it under more stress as it recovers. That means treating it as gently as possible.

After your laser procedure, we will provide detailed instructions as to when you can first use cleansers and apply products. When you do, be sure to start with an extremely gentle, fragrance-free cleanser and dry your face with a newly washed towel. After cleansing, apply a mild, nourishing moisturizer that won’t irritate your skin. And definitely skip all exfoliants until your skin is fully recovered! (When you have a laser treatment here at the Swan Center, we’ll be sure to check your products and offer expert recommendations.)

When you’re ready to leave the house, you might wonder about cosmetics. We recommend starting with fresh foundation and cheek products (old products can easily harbor bacteria) and only using mineral makeup. This is also a great time to get out new brushes, or thoroughly cleanse yours, since they are often full of germs.

3. Be religious about post-treatment SPF

If it is important to avoid sun exposure before your procedure, it is even more crucial afterwards. For the initial recovery period, you’ll want to stay out of the sun entirely. If you do have to be outside, wear a broad-brimmed hat and a high-SPF sunscreen. For extra protection, we recommend you wear sunscreen inside as well, as UV rays pass through glass windows—where there is daylight, there is UV!

Even after healing is complete, you’ll want to continue to use a broad spectrum sunscreen to protect your renewed skin and help your results to last.

4. Don’t touch

After treatment, your skin’s protective layer is compromised and, as we mentioned before, it is more vulnerable to bacteria, so you’ll need to avoid touching your skin. It can be very tempting to feel your skin’s progress or disturb peeling skin, but you must resist the urge! Besides the risk of infection, scratching, rubbing, or picking can also increase irritation and inhibit healing, and even create new scars. Let your skin rest.

One other way our faces can pick up bacteria is from our smartphones, so consider giving yours regular wipe-downs with a sanitary wipe!

5. Get some sleep

What does sleep have to do with your skin? Actually, a lot. It isn’t just that sleep is important to healing in your body in general. A lack of sleep also causes stress, which leads to inflammation. Stress also raises cortisol levels in your blood, which contributes to the aging and damage of skin.

Enough sleep is also important for the production of collagen, which laser therapy is intended to stimulate.

Experts recommend 7-9 hours a night for adults; give yourself permission to get the rest you need. Your skin will thank you.
