Every year, hundreds of thousands of women have breast augmentation. With more implant choices than ever, you can get just the look you want, whether you're looking for ample cleavage or a subtle, naturally shaped enhancement. Read on to learn all about it!
If you wish you had larger, more shapely breasts, breast augmentation is the most effective and proven way to get curves you’ll love. Breast augmentation can also help if you have one breast that is noticeably smaller than the other (breast asymmetry).
Breast augmentation will increase your breast size, as well as improve the shape of your breasts. Many women say they feel much more confident after having breast augmentation surgery. In fact, peer-reviewed studies indicate that cosmetic surgery can improve psychosocial wellbeing. The key to success is working with an experienced, board certified plastic surgeon who will help educate you about your breast augmentation options and personalize the procedure to fit your body.
Your current breast size, shoulder width, torso shape, and more will all play into the decisions you make with your doctor. Our surgeons here at The Swan Center work closely with their patients to help determine the size, shape, and type (silicone or saline) or breast implant that is best for each woman’s body. Every woman is unique, and so careful consideration must be given to your unique body frame and desired outcome! If you also have sagging, an additional procedure that can be performed at the same time to enhance the result of breast augmentation is a breast lift.
Today, there are three different general types of breast implants available to women. At our practice, we offer all three. With three types of implants available, patients have more options to ensure beautiful surgical results and to help achieve each individual’s aesthetic goals.
Dr. Bauer listened to all my concerns and really paid attention to what I asked for. I am so satisfied with the way my breasts look – even only 2 months after surgery they are healing great and look so natural.
Saline implants are comprised of an outer silicone shell that is filled with saline, a sterile saltwater solution. This option offers greater flexibility with surgical incisions and placement. Saline implants are filled after insertion, allowing for the smallest incisions of all the implant options. With saline implants, patients with very little breast tissue sometimes complain they can see or feel wrinkling or the ridge of the implant shell as there is very little camouflage, even with implants placed below the muscle.
In case of an implant rupture, the sterile saline solution is safely absorbed by your body. You will more than likely notice the rupture more quickly with the sudden deflation in breast size. Saline implants are available to women 18 years and older.
Silicone breast implants
Silicone implants have been available since 2005. These implants are manufactured using a silicone shell filled with silicone gel. Many patients consider silicone implants to have the most natural look and feel, more closely resembling natural breast tissue.
Silicone implants can give a fuller, more natural appearance as the silicone material lies more naturally against the body. They are filled directly by the manufacturer, so the incision must accommodate insertion. Silicone implants typically require a slightly larger incision than saline implants but can certainly be hidden. Incision site and placement are dependent your natural anatomy, implants you choice, and personal goals. and based on your discussions in your consultation with your board certified plastic surgeon.
Silicone implants have a slightly less risk of wrinkling or folding. Although chances are slight, if your implant does rupture, the silicone gel solution leaks slowly, and you may not notice any changes as the silicone stays within the capsule or pocket created during your surgery. These changes are typically noticed during a routine mammogram, ultrasound or MRI. The current FDA recommendations are for patients to undergo regular MRIs to monitor for these ruptures.
Ultra cohesive breast implants (gummy bear implants)
While silicone breast implants have been available off and on since the 1960s, the fifth generation silicone implants, ultra cohesive gel breast implants, were first offered in 1993 in Europe. The first clinical trials of the ultra cohesive gel implants began in 2001, and have now been approved by the FDA. The goal was to create an implant that would maintain its shape and reduce common risks such as shifting, folding, or collapsing. By making the gel denser, it acts less like a liquid and more like a solid, meaning that the shape of the implant, and therefore, the breast, does not change due to gravity.
Ultra cohesive gel breast implants, informally known as gummy bear implants, are form-stable implants that have gained popularity over the last few years. The silicone used retains its shape and has the consistency of a gummy bear type candy. They usually require a slightly larger incision, which is easily hidden in the fold of the breast.
I have wanted a breast augmentation for YEARS, but could never go through with it because of the fear of what could happen. Dr. Fardo and his staff made me feel 100% comfortable through the entire process, and I could not be happier with the outcome!!
There are a few key benefits to using ultra cohesive silicone breast implants:
Ultra cohesive implants retain their shape, which decreases the risk of structure shifting, collapsing, or folding.
In the rare event that a rupture occurs, form-stable silicone will not spread beyond the implant capsule.
Gummy bear implants have a very low capsular contracture rate.
It is incredibly important that the doctor you’re working with is a board certified plastic surgeon that understands the different surgical options. The surgeons at The Swan Center for Plastic Surgery helped implement and have participated in the FDA trials of ultra cohesive gel breast implants, and we bring this experience and knowledge into our patient consultations to offer all implant options for well-informed decision making.

What is having breast surgery like?
First, you will receive anesthesia to ensure you are relaxed and will not experience any discomfort during the procedure. At The Swan Center, we use board certified anesthesiologists and recommend general anesthesia for breast augmentation so that you will be asleep throughout the procedure; most women find this much more comfortable and less stressful. Your surgeon will make incisions according to the plans you together determined before surgery, then carefully insert the breast implants, adjusting placement to optimize your shape
You’ll wake up after the procedure and immediately notice your new shape. While you will be a bit sore and swollen, most of our patients report that post-surgical discomfort is easily tolerated with prescription medication. Once you have had some time to rest and we are sure all is well, you will be able to return home with your designated driver and caregiver, often a spouse, partner, or your “breast friend.”
Dr. Cat and the nurses I’ve had the pleasure of working with through this whole process have been above and beyond incredible! From my first consult to each and every appointment following they have made it such an easy process. Dr.Cat really listened and understood exactly what I wanted to accomplish with my surgery and my results were exactly what I wanted!
After surgery, you will go home in an elastic bra. This bra will help hold the breasts in the correct position as you begin to heal. Any discomfort is easily controlled with oral medication. Light activities can be resumed as tolerated, and aerobic activities can be started in about 3 weeks. You can expect to be back at work in about 4 days. For final results, it will take up to 6 months for your breasts to fully settle and for you to enjoy your improved self-esteem. Be sure to follow the personalized patient instructions we provide before surgery and call us with any questions!
