Because that muscle movement isn’t returning as quickly, many patients find they’re able to stretch their appointments further. 

How to Tell When It’s Time for a Touch-Up

Botox doesn’t disappear all at once. It fades gradually, and the signs can be subtle at first.

Wrinkles reappearing is the most obvious indicator that your Botox is wearing off. Those forehead lines or crow’s feet you forgot about will start making a comeback when you’re making certain facial expressions, but as muscle movement returns, you’ll feel the change before you see it. You might also notice some asymmetry as the effects wear off. Botox doesn’t always fade evenly, so one eyebrow might lift more than the other, for example. 

One sign that catches people off guard is “cakey” or uneven-looking makeup. When Botox is working well, it gives you a smoother canvas to work with, so foundation and powder tend to sit better on the skin. As muscle movement returns, you might notice it settling into lines as they reappear. If your concealer is suddenly creasing under your eyes or your foundation is folding into your forehead lines, your Botox is likely wearing off.

Any of these signs can mean it’s time to book your next appointment. Most patients find it easier to schedule their touch-ups proactively, around the three-month mark, rather than waiting until their results have fully worn off. That way, you’re maintaining your look rather than starting from scratch each time. When you come in for your touch-up, your injector will assess how your face responded to your last treatment and make adjustments if needed.

How Can I Extend the Effects of Botox?

Want to increase the longevity of your treatment? These strategies can help.

Try Taking a Zinc Supplement 

Some research suggests that zinc may help Botox work more effectively. A study published in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology found that the majority of patients (92%) who took a zinc and phytase supplement experienced a 30% longer duration of effect. Talk to your provider before adding any supplement to your routine.

Don’t Work Out Right After Your Appointment 

We know, we know, you don’t want to miss a gym day. But exercising immediately after Botox can rev up your metabolism and increase blood flow to the face, potentially causing the product to wear off faster. This is especially true for intense cardio like running or HIIT. Most providers recommend waiting at least 24 hours before vigorous exercise.

Get Regular Treatments 

We mentioned this earlier, but it bears repeating: over time, regular Botox treatments “train” your facial muscles to stay relaxed. It’s well-established that patients who maintain a consistent Botox schedule often find their results last longer with each successive treatment.

Switch to Dysport or Daxxify

While most people see increased longevity with regular Botox treatments, others may notice it doesn’t last like it used to as their metabolism and needs change. If that sounds like you, our expert team can recommend an option that is a better fit for your body: Dysport, Xeomin or Daxxify. Dysport kicks in faster and spreads more easily, making it ideal for larger areas, while Xeomin is a “clean” neurotoxin free from accessory proteins, reducing the risk of antibody resistance. Daxxify is a newer option that’s been shown to last up to six months in some cases.

What Else Can I Do to Enhance My Botox Results?

Here’s what we tell patients when they come in for a consultation.

Mini Facelift vs. Full Facelift: What’s the Difference?

A full facelift addresses the lower two-thirds of the face and the neck. It’s a comprehensive facial rejuvenation that can take 10 to 15 years off your appearance.

A mini facelift, sometimes called a MACS-lift or short-scar facelift, concentrates on the lower face and jawline. It targets early to moderate signs of aging through smaller incisions.

An important note: there’s no standardized definition of “mini facelift” in plastic surgery. Different surgeons approach it differently, and it’s common to come across terms like “weekend facelift” that are just marketing tools, not unique techniques. 

That’s one of many reasons why your consultation matters so much. You need to understand exactly what a surgeon means by “mini facelift” so you can evaluate whether their approach fits your goals.

What Does a Mini Facelift Include?

A mini facelift is effective for:

• Early jowling
• Loss of jawline definition
• Sagging in the lower face 
• Deepening nasolabial folds (the lines from nose to mouth)
• A generally tired appearance 

It is not our recommended approach for addressing the neck, which undergoes some rejuvenation with a standard facelift and full rejuvenation with a neck lift. 

It is also not a solution for the forehead or eye area, which are targeted with a brow lift and blepharoplasty, respectively.

Does a Mini Facelift Include a Neck Lift?

Not typically. A mini facelift focuses on the lower face and jawline. While you might see some improvement in your upper neck, the procedure isn’t designed for significant neck laxity, loose skin under the chin, excess submental fat (double chin), or vertical neck bands.

For those concerns, we may recommend a full facelift or a facelift/neck lift combination that addresses the face and neck together. Your surgeon will be upfront about what is and isn’t possible with any procedure you’re considering.  

What Are the Benefits of a Mini Facelift?

The mini facelift is great for the right patient because it:

• Minimizes signs of aging before they become prominent 
• Is a quicker procedure (typically one to two hours)
• Requires shorter incisions, which means less visible scarring
• Involves less downtime with less swelling and bruising
• Can be performed under local anesthesia with sedation
• Has a lower cost compared to a full facelift
• Produces results that look subtle and natural 

A mini facelift done well should leave you looking like a refreshed and rested version of yourself, not like someone who’s had surgery. That subtlety is the point.  

What Are the Downsides of a Mini Facelift?

A mini facelift isn’t for everyone. Your surgeon will inform you of the limitations:

• It won’t address significant neck laxity or “turkey neck.”
• It won’t improve the upper face (forehead, brows, eyelids)
• Results may not last as long as a full facelift
• Patients with more advanced aging may not achieve their desired degree of correction

None of these points means it’s a bad procedure. It’s great for some patients and not for others. The goal is to match the right procedure with the right patient. Having performed thousands of facelifts, our surgeons can tell you honestly which category you fall into.

What Is the Average Cost of a Mini Facelift?

The cost of a mini facelift varies depending on your anatomy, whether you’re combining procedures, and the complexity of your case. During your consultation, we’ll provide a detailed quote so you know exactly what to expect.

How Long Is the Recovery Time After a Mini Facelift Procedure?

Recovery is one of the mini facelift’s biggest selling points. Most patients return to normal activities within seven to 10 days. Swelling and bruising are less pronounced than with a full facelift and resolve more quickly.

You’ll need to take it easy for two to three weeks, avoiding vigorous activity and heavy lifting. But many patients feel comfortable going out in public within a week or so. 

How Long Does a Mini Facelift Last?

Most patients enjoy their refreshed look for years. You can support the longevity of your results by leading a healthy lifestyle and taking good care of your skin.

A mini facelift doesn’t halt aging. Your face will continue to age naturally, but from a more youthful starting point. Many patients find that even years down the road, they still look better than they would have without the procedure.

Some return for a second mini facelift later. Others decide to have a full facelift as they get older. Many extend their results with nonsurgical treatments along the way.  

What Is the Best Age for a Mini Facelift?

There’s no magic number. We see mini facelift patients ranging from their late 30s to their 60s. What matters isn’t your chronological age. It’s what’s happening with your face and how you feel about those changes.

Many of our mini facelift patients are in their 40s and early 50s. They’re noticing softening along the jaw and deeper nasolabial folds, and they don’t want to wait until things progress further. They’d rather address changes now and age gracefully from a new starting point.

What Are the Best Nonsurgical Alternatives to a Mini Facelift?

If you’re not ready for surgery of any kind, there are options at our award-winning med spa that can address early facial aging:

• Dermal fillers can soften deep creases like nasolabial folds, restore lost volume and contour the jawline
• Botox and Dysport can smooth expression wrinkles and lift downturned mouth corners
• Radiofrequency microneedling can tighten, smooth and firm skin by stimulating collagen production

These treatments work well for patients with very early concerns or for extending facelift results. However, none of them replicate what surgery can accomplish. If you have enough skin laxity, nothing will be as effective as a surgical facelift.

Should I Get a Mini Facelift or a Full Facelift?

The answer depends on a few things:

Where is the laxity? If your concerns are primarily in your lower face with minimal neck involvement, the mini approach may be ideal. If loose skin extends down into your neck, a full facelift will deliver more complete results.

What’s your skin quality like? Patients with better skin elasticity tend to be stronger candidates for the mini approach. The skin bounces back more readily.

Are you interested in “prejuvenation”? Some patients prefer to address early changes rather than waiting for more significant aging to set in. A mini facelift can “lock in” your current appearance and let you age more gradually from there.

How much downtime can you manage? Mini facelift patients tend to recover faster. If you have a demanding schedule, that may be the deciding factor.

How dramatic do you want your result to be? A mini facelift refreshes. A full facelift delivers more dramatic, longer-lasting results. Neither is inherently better — it depends on what you’re hoping to achieve.

#1. What Are Dermal Fillers?

Often referred to as soft tissue fillers, dermal fillers consist of gel-like substances that are injected beneath the skin’s surface. Many are based on hyaluronic acid (HA), a substance that occurs naturally in the body and gives volume and hydration to the skin. Others, such as RADIESSE and Sculptra, contain ingredients that trigger your body to produce more of its own collagen. Fillers are used to plump up areas that have lost volume due to aging or other factors. At The Swan Center, we use dermal fillers to smooth wrinkles, create subtle lift, and enhance facial contours for a more youthful and defined appearance.

#2. How Long Do Dermal Fillers Last?

The longevity of dermal fillers varies depending on the type of filler used and individual factors such as your metabolism and lifestyle. Generally, hyaluronic acid fillers (like those from the Restylane® and JUVÉDERM® family of products) can last anywhere from 6 to 2 years, based on the formulation.

RADIESSE®, meanwhile, contains calcium hydroxylapatite microspheres. This durable collagen stimulator can last 12 to 18 months.

#3. Where Can Dermal Fillers Be Used?

Dermal fillers can be safely used throughout the face and even injected into the hands or buttocks (such as in our Sculptra® Butt Lift). HA fillers (Restylane® and JUVÉDERM®) are great for treating wrinkles and folds in the lower half of the face and restoring volume loss in the mid-face.

Restylane and Juvederm can treat nasolabial folds, marionette lines (vertical lines at each corner of the mouth that extend down toward the jawline), lipstick lines, smile lines, and more.

Sculptra can also be used to help restore lost volume to the face. Both Radiesse and Sculptra can be used to help in different areas of the body such as hands, knees, and in the buttocks to enhance projection and correct hip dips.

#4. How Much Do Dermal Fillers Cost?

Dermal filler prices vary based on the type of filler used, the amount of product needed, and the provider’s expertise. At The Swan Center, we price our dermal fillers by the syringe.

Dermal fillers are generally considered safe, especially when administered by a trained and experienced provider. However, like any cosmetic procedure, there are potential risks and side effects to be aware of, including bruising, swelling, redness, and, rarely, allergic reactions.

Hyaluronic acid-based fillers like Restylane can be instantly dissolved with hyaluronidase if you are showing any negative effects or are unhappy with how the filler looks. We often meet patients who tell us, simply, “Botox me!” While the answer is usually an enthusiastic “You got it!,” Botox® is best for certain dynamic wrinkles, and there are actually a number of highly effective wrinkle treatments that we can use to give you a personalized, optimal result. As a nurse injector in Atlanta, I always customize a plan based on each type of wrinkle you want to treat! Here’s everything in our arsenal, plus your treatment options by the area.

Medical-grade wrinkle treatments

Wrinkle reduction can involve a range of treatments, and not every wrinkle requires an injectable. From facial treatments that improve skin quality to skincare you use at home, we believe in a complementary anti-aging approach using tools like:

• Laser treatments, peels, and facials like chemical peels, microneedling, Hydrafacial®, and laser peels are effective anti-aging options for combating fine lines and improving overall skin quality. Each year, I receive a HALO Laser Treatment to boost collagen deep in the dermis, which is literally what prevents wrinkles.
• Botox-type injectable neurotoxins like Botox® and Dysport® treat dynamic wrinkles, especially in the upper face. I use Botox to preserve youthfulness or to slow the signs of aging, or even if you want to smooth or soften existing lines! I take a unique approach to treatment plans for each individual, because no two faces are the same. With consistent treatments, neurotoxin patients will be so happy with the investment they make in their skin—after treatment AND long term!
• Dermal fillers like Juvéderm® and Restylane® treat dynamic and static wrinkles, especially naso-labial folds and marionette lines below the corners of the mouth. Filler is an AMAZING tool to soften lines and restore volume. By using a hyaluronic acid based dermal filler, the boost and glow your skin will achieve is absolutely stunning!
• Medical-grade skincare is a critical part of our arsenal for supporting your in-office treatments with an effective, wrinkle-fighting skincare regimen at home. Skin care is the security for your investment: In-office treatments are amazing, but if you don’t have a daily regimen at home, then you are not fighting wrinkles at max capacity! 70% of your anti-aging routine is at home with a curated medical grade routine, and then 30% stems from in-office procedures.

Dynamic vs. static wrinkles

The first thing to know about wrinkles before I select a treatment is that they can be either dynamic or static. Dynamic lines appear when you’re smiling, frowning, squinting, or making other facial expressions. Static wrinkles are etched into the skin, even when your face is at rest, and tend to form in your thirties or later as your body’s production of collagen and elastin (the building blocks of plump, elastic skin) begins to diminish.

Each type of wrinkle, depending on its location in the face or neck, calls for a different anti-aging approach. Most dynamic wrinkles respond best to Botox-type injectables, although some (namely the nasolabial folds) can be treated with filler. However, once wrinkles become static, they usually require filler, laser treatments, and/or a surgical lifting procedure to reverse. Both dynamic and static wrinkles, in any area of the face or neck, can also benefit from skin resurfacing facials and a medical grade skin care routine.

Wrinkle formation and treatment, by the area

Here’s how wrinkles form in the key areas of the face, and my go-tos for smoothing them out:

Forehead

Horizontal forehead wrinkles are caused by movement of the frontalis muscle, especially when raising the brows; these lines can deepen with sun damage. Treat forehead lines with neuromodulators like Botox or Dysport. For best results, relax these muscles early to slow wrinkles’ formation!

Frown lines (between the eyebrows)

The “11”-shaped lines that form between the eyebrows are the original territory of our faithful friend Botox. Injected into the muscles below the inner eyebrows that pull your brow down into a frown, neurotoxin stops those lines from frowning, allowing the skin to smooth itself out.

Crow’s feet (eyes)

These lines emanate from the edges of your eyes when smiling or squinting, and may be made worse by sun exposure—so always wear a good pair of sunglasses, in addition to sunscreen and a hat! Botox is highly effective for crow’s feet, and it’s a good idea to pair it with a topical medical-grade eye cream to reduce the appearance of these fine lines.

Nasolabial folds

These folds that extend from the nose to the outside corners of the mouth, framing your smile, are often caused by movement when smiling. Some people are genetically predisposed to have deep nasolabial folds because of their inherited anatomy. The best way to treat nasolabial folds is with dermal fillers like Restylane Lyft, which can be injected deeply in the dermis and also in the more shallow epidermis layer to “fill” the wrinkles and soften their appearance.

Lips

Wrinkles in and around the lips form due to drinking through straws, smoking, general volume loss over time, and even movement as you talk. To treat wrinkles here, we typically use lip fillers to replace lost volume and smooth perioral lines (a.k.a. smoker’s lines). We can also use a small amount of Botox above the upper lip to soften the muscle and allow the upper lip to curl outward with a technique commonly called the “lip flip.”

Neck

In the neck, you may see horizontal lines that form from looking down at your phone or computer (tech neck), as well as vertical platysmal band lines that become distinct due to thinning skin. To improve the texture of thin, delicate neck skin, RF microneedling and laser skin resurfacing are effective options. To address the vertical bands, Botox can be injected to soften the muscles that cause them. And when sagging tissues in the lower face and neck have progressed beyond the power of non-surgical treatments, a facelift and/or neck lift with one of our Atlanta plastic surgeons is the ultimate neck rejuvenation procedure.

Prevent wrinkles with good choices, skincare, and Botox-type injectables

There are a handful of proven ways to stop wrinkles from worsening: Botox or Dysport can be injected preventatively to stop dynamic wrinkles from forming in the first place. Protect skin from sun exposure with sunscreen, hats, seeking shade, and wearing sunglasses! You can counter the very real effects of air pollution on skin aging by applying antioxidants, such as Vitamin C, in your skincare routine. And products like retinol (tretinoin) are highly effective when used as directed. Most importantly, make good choices: eat a nutrient-dense diet, and get regular exercise and quality sleep!

From da Vinci’s “Lady with an Ermine” to Thutmose’s iconic “Nefertiti Bust,” the cheeks have been celebrated by cultures around the world for the definition and structure they provide the face. Historically, plump, rosy cheeks were seen as a sign of health—and therefore, attractiveness—by European cultures. However, over the last half-century, prominent upper cheekbones and narrower cheeks have become universally favored, with more men and women seeking plastic surgery to contour their cheeks than ever before.

For those who don’t want to undergo a surgical procedure like buccal fat removal or cheek implants to get sculpted cheeks, injectable fillers are a great alternative. In this month’s post, we explain how you can get chiseled cheeks surgery-free with simple filler injections.

What are cheek fillers?

Cheek fillers are strategically-placed dermal filler injections that provide volume and structure in the area around and above the cheeks. These fillers are typically comprised of hyaluronic acid (HA), a naturally-occurring molecule in the human body that is responsible for absorbing water to keep your skin supple and moist. HA-based fillers not only lift and contour the cheeks but also smooth wrinkles and fine lines in the face by hydrating the skin from within.

How do cheek fillers work?

Over time, skin loses its ability to produce collagen and elastin, which can lead to a saggy, sunken-in facial appearance. When most people age, they lose volume in their mid-face & cheeks and experience skin sagging, or “jowling,” in their lower face. When carefully injected by an expert, fillers can temporarily volumize sunken areas and create symmetry in the face.

Increasing the volume around your cheekbones can create the illusion of a more defined bone structure. A skilled surgeon can use cheek fillers to control the light and shadows on your face, highlighting certain areas and using shadows to create the appearance of natural depressions. Contoured upper cheeks can also reflect light into the eyes to help you look more refreshed and invigorated.

Another added benefit of cheek fillers is that because of the filler’s moisturizing effect, you can get away with wearing less makeup, as your cheeks will take on a natural glow you’ll want to show off.

How long do cheek fillers last?

Hyaluronic acid cheek fillers typically last between 9-12 months before maintenance treatments are needed.

Which fillers are best for cheeks?

At the Swan Center, we use the Restylane line of fillers to sculpt the cheeks. Restylane is an FDA-approved HA-based filler with a safe and effective track record. Like other HA fillers, Restylane not only firms and volumizes skin, but also hydrates it from the inside out for smoother skin with fewer wrinkles and lines. Other fillers that can be used in the cheeks include Juvéderm, Radiesse, Sculptra Aesthetic, and Bellafill.

Cheek fillers are customizable

Everyone’s facial anatomy is unique, and at The Swan Center, our goal is to bring out this individualized beauty in each of our patients. Cheek fillers are a wonderful way we are able to achieve this because they are highly customizable. Here are a few ways we can adapt cheek fillers to enhance your face.

For patients with a rounder face:

While filler can’t reduce volume in your face, it can make the lower cheeks appear slimmer by volumizing the upper cheeks. This will also elevate the mid-face for a more lifted and elongated facial appearance (think Demi Moore circa 2011).

For patients with a narrower face:

Filler injections to the mid-face and lower cheeks can help fill out the face for a healthy, youthful appearance (think Jennifer Lawrence in the first Hunger Games film).

Cheek fillers are quick and easy

Cheek fillers are done in-office in under 15 minutes. The HA begins to volumize and hydrate skin immediately, so you’ll begin to notice results as soon as you leave the office. Even better, because Restylane increases collagen and elastin production in your skin, you’ll see your skin tone improve over the following months.

Cheek fillers have zero recovery period, and, when performed with Restylane injections, last for up to 12 months.

Cheek fillers are a worry-free procedure. If for any reason you aren’t completely satisfied with your results, your surgeon can inject hyaluronidase, an enzyme that breaks down HA, to reverse your filler. Or, if you’ve had a less-than-ideal filler experience elsewhere, our expert plastic surgeons can use hyaluronidase to return your face to its natural state and work with you on achieving the results you want.

How can I enhance my cheek fillers?

What is RF microneedling?

RF microneedling has all the skin resurfacing benefits of traditional microneedling, but with the added technology of insulated needles that deliver RF energy to the skin, creating new microchannels linking your skin’s layers.
