When Another Treatment May Be More Appropriate 

You Have Significant Skin Laxity

HALO excels at improving skin tone, texture and pigmentation. What it doesn’t do is lift or tighten significantly loose skin. If your primary concern is sagging along the jawline, jowls or loose skin on the neck, HALO won’t provide the structural lift you’re looking for.

Patients with significant laxity often benefit more from treatments that address the underlying tissue, such as surgical options like a facelift or non-surgical skin tightening procedures. HALO can complement these treatments by improving skin quality, but it shouldn’t be considered a solution for sagging on its own.

You Are Currently Taking Accutane (Isotretinoin)

Isotretinoin, commonly known by the brand name Accutane, makes the skin more fragile and sensitive, increasing the risk of side effects like scarring, burns and improper healing after a laser treatment. We recommend waiting at least six months after you stop taking isotretinoin before undergoing HALO, giving your body time to clear the medication from your system. 

Your Main Concern Is Deep Acne Scarring

HALO can improve mild to moderate acne scarring, and many patients see smoother texture after treatment. However, deep ice pick scars, boxcar scars or severe pitted scarring may require more aggressive interventions, such as subcision, excision or a fully ablative CO2 laser. The choice can feel surprisingly challenging, especially when you’re sorting through conflicting information online. Some sources make fat transfer sound like the obvious winner because it’s “natural.” Others dismiss it as unreliable. 

The truth, as with most things in plastic surgery, is nuanced.

Understanding Your Breast Augmentation Options

Breast Implants

Breast implants are silicone shells filled with either a saline (saltwater) solution or a cohesive silicone gel. They’re placed beneath your breast tissue or chest muscle to add volume and shape. Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation

Fat transfer to the breast takes an all-natural approach. Your surgeon harvests fat from areas where you have excess (often the abdomen, flanks, or thighs), purifies it and strategically injects it into your breasts.

The appeal is obvious: you’re using your own tissue, nothing foreign. You also get the bonus of slimming the donor area. For patients seeking a modest degree of enhancement with a soft, natural feel, fat transfer can be an excellent choice.

Combining Breast Implants and Breast Fat Transfer

Breast implants and fat transfer aren’t mutually exclusive. Many patients actually benefit from combining them. 

The hybrid technique uses implants for the primary volume and structure, then adds fat to refine the result. Transferred fat can smooth visible implant edges and create softer transitions between the implant and natural tissue. The fat essentially camouflages the implant and fine-tunes the overall shape, giving you the benefits of an implant’s volume with the benefits of fat’s natural look and feel.

The Questions to Ask Yourself While You Decide

When you meet with Dr. Bauer, Dr. Fardo, or Dr. Catignani for your consultation, these are some of the topics you’ll discuss.

How Much Fuller Do You Want to Be?

This is the deciding factor for many patients.

Fat transfer can typically increase your breast size by one to two cup sizes at most. And that comes with a caveat: not all the transferred fat survives. Your body will reabsorb a portion of it over the following months, so your final result may be smaller than what you see immediately after surgery. If you’re looking for a subtle, natural result, fat transfer might be a perfect fit.

Breast implants offer more flexibility. Patients today generally request smaller implants than they did a decade or two ago. They want to look enhanced but not obviously augmented. Modern implants and surgical techniques make that very achievable, but implants can also give you a dramatic change if that’s what you’re looking for.

Do You Have Enough Fat to Harvest?

Fat transfer requires adequate donor fat. During your consultation, your surgeon will assess whether you have sufficient fat to achieve the goals you describe. Patients who are very lean may simply not have enough tissue to transfer.

If you don’t have much fat to spare, implants are the practical choice regardless of your preferences. Silicone implants often achieve the best result if you have little natural breast tissue to begin with.

What Feels More Important: Natural Tissue or Predictable Results?

Some patients feel strongly about not putting anything foreign in their bodies. If that sounds like you, using your own fat rather than an implant might be a no-brainer.  

Other patients prioritize predictability. Implants offer more certainty about your final outcome. You can try on sizers and view simulations, and implants won’t change size or shape once they’re in place. Fat transfer involves more variables, including how much fat is harvestable and how much survives the transfer.

Neither priority is right or wrong. It’s up to you to decide what you value most.

How Comfortable Are You With Scars?

Any time there’s an incision, there’s the possibility of a scar. With implants, the incision is placed so the resulting scar is easy to conceal under most clothing and swimsuits. Our surgeons typically use the inframammary approach, where the incision is hidden in the natural fold beneath the breast.

With fat transfer, there’s almost no scarring on the breasts themselves, and only small incisions are used to insert the liposuction cannula for harvesting fat. The incision lines are nearly invisible once they’re healed. If minimal scarring is a high priority for you, fat transfer has the advantage.

What About the Possibility of Future Surgery? 

Breast implants are not lifetime devices. While many women keep their implants for 10, 15, even 20 years without issue, you should go into the procedure understanding that replacement or removal is a possibility at some point in your future. 

Fat transfer eliminates implant-related complications. There’s no device that can rupture, harden or need replacing. However, fat transfer isn’t necessarily a one-and-done solution either. Because a portion of transferred fat gets reabsorbed, some patients choose to have a second fat grafting session to achieve their desired fullness. 

Neither option guarantees you’ll never need another procedure, but the nature of the potential future surgery differs.

What Risks Are You Willing to Accept?

Every surgical procedure carries some risk.  

Fat transfer tends to involve less extensive surgery with smaller incisions and typically a shorter recovery. The risks are primarily related to fat survival (unpredictable volume retention) and the possibility of fat necrosis (hardened lumps of fat that didn’t survive). There’s no risk of implant-related complications because there’s no implant.

Breast implants carry their own considerations. Capsular contracture, where scar tissue around the implant tightens and hardens, affects some patients. Implants can rupture, shift positions or become visible through the skin. There’s also increasing awareness of BIA-ALCL, a rare lymphoma associated with certain textured implants.

Will Your Results Stand the Test of Time? 

Both breast augmentation options are long-lasting.

Implants maintain their volume consistently over time. Your breasts won’t shrink if you lose weight or fluctuate with your body’s changes the way natural tissue does. The shape you achieve is the shape you keep, barring complications and the natural aging process.

Fat that successfully integrates into your breast tissue is there for good. However, like all fat in your body, it responds to weight fluctuations. Gain weight, and your breasts may grow. Lose weight, and you may lose some of that enhanced volume.

If you recently got Botox and find yourself watching for the first hint of a crease, wondering when those smooth results will start to fade, you’re asking the question every Botox patient eventually asks: How long is this actually going to last?

The short answer is three to four months for most people. The longer answer involves your metabolism, your muscles and your habits, plus a few tricks that can help stretch those results further than you might expect.

At The Swan Center, our injectors have worked side by side with our board-certified plastic surgeons, giving them an eye for facial anatomy that makes a real difference in how your results look and how long they last. Let’s break down what you can realistically expect from your Botox treatment.

Typical Botox Results Timeline

While each person’s results may vary depending on individual factors, there is a general timeline you can expect with your Botox results.

• Days 1 to 3: You probably won’t notice much. Some patients see early changes, but most don’t. The injections are still settling in. 
• Days 4 to 7: Results start becoming visible. Lines soften as muscle activity decreases. This is the perfect time for your complimentary follow-up to make sure your results are settling beautifully. 
• Weeks 2 to 4: You’re at peak effectiveness. This is when your Botox looks its best.
• Months 2 to 3: Still looking good, but the neurotoxin is gradually being metabolized by your body. If you have a fast metabolism, the effects might start wearing off. 
• Months 3 to 4: Muscle movement starts returning. You’ll notice more creases and your expressions becoming animated again.
• Month 4 and beyond: For most patients, it’s time to schedule a touch-up.

First-time patients often find their results fade a bit faster than this timeline suggests. Your muscles haven’t yet been “trained” to stay relaxed, so they bounce back more quickly. Many patients find that their Botox lasts longer with consistent treatments.

Why Does Botox Wear Off Faster for Some People?

Not everyone metabolizes Botox at the same rate. Several factors affect how long you’ll enjoy your results, including your metabolism, your expressiveness, and the amount used. 

Your Metabolism

People with faster metabolisms tend to break down Botox more quickly. If you’re highly active, exercise frequently or just run hot in general, your body may process the neurotoxin faster than someone with a slower metabolic rate.

Muscle Activity

Do you have particularly strong facial muscles? Expressive faces are wonderful, but all that movement means your muscles are working harder against the Botox. If you had injections in more mobile areas, say around the mouth for a lip flip or gummy smile treatment, your results may also wear off sooner as the muscles “use up” the Botox faster. 

Dosage

The amount of Botox used matters. Underdosing can lead to results that wear off prematurely. During your consultation, our skilled nurse injectors will assess your needs, goals and facial anatomy to recommend a dosage that balances natural-looking results with longevity.

Consistency

Regular Botox treatments can actually extend the effects of the neurotoxin. When you maintain a consistent schedule, your facial muscles become conditioned to stay relaxed. Because that muscle movement isn’t returning as quickly, many patients find they’re able to stretch their appointments further. 

How to Tell When It’s Time for a Touch-Up

Botox doesn’t disappear all at once. It fades gradually, and the signs can be subtle at first.

Wrinkles reappearing is the most obvious indicator that your Botox is wearing off. Those forehead lines or crow’s feet you forgot about will start making a comeback when you’re making certain facial expressions, but as muscle movement returns, you’ll feel the change before you see it. You might also notice some asymmetry as the effects wear off. Botox doesn’t always fade evenly, so one eyebrow might lift more than the other, for example. 

One sign that catches people off guard is “cakey” or uneven-looking makeup. When Botox is working well, it gives you a smoother canvas to work with, so foundation and powder tend to sit better on the skin. As muscle movement returns, you might notice it settling into lines as they reappear. If your concealer is suddenly creasing under your eyes or your foundation is folding into your forehead lines, your Botox is likely wearing off.

Any of these signs can mean it’s time to book your next appointment. Most patients find it easier to schedule their touch-ups proactively, around the three-month mark, rather than waiting until their results have fully worn off. That way, you’re maintaining your look rather than starting from scratch each time. When you come in for your touch-up, your injector will assess how your face responded to your last treatment and make adjustments if needed.

How Can I Extend the Effects of Botox?

Want to increase the longevity of your treatment? These strategies can help.

Try Taking a Zinc Supplement 

Some research suggests that zinc may help Botox work more effectively. A study published in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology found that the majority of patients (92%) who took a zinc and phytase supplement experienced a 30% longer duration of effect. Talk to your provider before adding any supplement to your routine.

Don’t Work Out Right After Your Appointment 

We know, we know, you don’t want to miss a gym day. But exercising immediately after Botox can rev up your metabolism and increase blood flow to the face, potentially causing the product to wear off faster. This is especially true for intense cardio like running or HIIT. Most providers recommend waiting at least 24 hours before vigorous exercise.

Get Regular Treatments 

We mentioned this earlier, but it bears repeating: over time, regular Botox treatments “train” your facial muscles to stay relaxed. It’s well-established that patients who maintain a consistent Botox schedule often find their results last longer with each successive treatment.

Switch to Dysport or Daxxify

While most people see increased longevity with regular Botox treatments, others may notice it doesn’t last like it used to as their metabolism and needs change. If that sounds like you, our expert team can recommend an option that is a better fit for your body: Dysport, Xeomin or Daxxify. Dysport kicks in faster and spreads more easily, making it ideal for larger areas, while Xeomin is a “clean” neurotoxin free from accessory proteins, reducing the risk of antibody resistance. Daxxify is a newer option that’s been shown to last up to six months in some cases.

What Else Can I Do to Enhance My Botox Results?

The truth is, choosing between open and closed rhinoplasty isn’t about which technique is universally “better.” It comes down to deciding which approach is most likely to give you the result you’re envisioning. The technique follows the patient’s needs, not the other way around.

The Basics: What Are Open and Closed Rhinoplasty?

Before we talk about why your goals are the starting point of your treatment plan, let’s define our technical terms.

Closed Rhinoplasty

In closed rhinoplasty, all incisions are made inside the nostrils. The surgeon works through these internal openings to reshape bone and cartilage. Because there’s no external cut, there’s no visible scar afterward.

The limitation? Your surgeon is essentially operating through a keyhole. Visibility is restricted, and so is physical access to the area. Both can make complex reshaping more challenging. Closed rhinoplasty works best for straightforward cases that don’t require significant amounts of change.

Open Rhinoplasty

Open rhinoplasty adds one small incision across the columella, the strip of tissue separating the nostrils. This allows the surgeon to see and access the underlying structures of the nose directly.  

This technique provides unobstructed access for more intricate or extensive work. It’s the more common approach for good reason: when surgeons have better visibility and access, their work can be more precise and personalized, and they can make more profound changes.

“Will the Scar From My Rhinoplasty Be Noticeable?”

This is the question behind most requests for closed rhinoplasty. 

Research shows that 98% of patients are not bothered by their columella scar, with 90% describing it as “invisible or barely perceptible.”  

The incision is placed in a shadowed area that people rarely examine closely. Within months, most scars fade to a faint line that even romantic partners don’t notice.

“Which Rhinoplasty Technique Means Faster Recovery?”

Closed rhinoplasty may involve marginally less swelling in the first week or two because there’s slightly less tissue manipulation. However, the overall recovery timeline is quite similar between techniques.

At The Swan Center, we’ve found that most patients feel comfortable returning to work about 10 to 14 days after their rhinoplasty. This is usually when the most obvious signs of surgery have faded.

Near-final results are visible around three months post-op. Subtle changes can continue to occur for up to one year. 

“Does One Rhinoplasty Technique Cost More Than the Other?”

What influences your rhinoplasty cost the most is the complexity of your case. For example, extensive tip restructuring with cartilage grafting is likely to require more of an investment than straightforward dorsal hump reduction. 

Open rhinoplasty can address more complex and extensive concerns. As a result, it is often more expensive than closed rhinoplasty. However, it is the preferred choice in many cases, as it best aligns with the patient’s goals.

This might surprise you: a systematic review of rhinoplasty outcomes found no consensus among plastic surgeons about which technique produces superior results. The choice largely comes down to the surgeon’s training, the complexity of your case, and what changes you’re hoping to achieve.

Here’s what we tell patients when they come in for a consultation.

Mini Facelift vs. Full Facelift: What’s the Difference?

A full facelift addresses the lower two-thirds of the face and the neck. It’s a comprehensive facial rejuvenation that can take 10 to 15 years off your appearance.

A mini facelift, sometimes called a MACS-lift or short-scar facelift, concentrates on the lower face and jawline. It targets early to moderate signs of aging through smaller incisions.

An important note: there’s no standardized definition of “mini facelift” in plastic surgery. Different surgeons approach it differently, and it’s common to come across terms like “weekend facelift” that are just marketing tools, not unique techniques. 

That’s one of many reasons why your consultation matters so much. You need to understand exactly what a surgeon means by “mini facelift” so you can evaluate whether their approach fits your goals.

What Does a Mini Facelift Include?

A mini facelift is effective for:

• Early jowling
• Loss of jawline definition
• Sagging in the lower face 
• Deepening nasolabial folds (the lines from nose to mouth)
• A generally tired appearance 

It is not our recommended approach for addressing the neck, which undergoes some rejuvenation with a standard facelift and full rejuvenation with a neck lift. 

It is also not a solution for the forehead or eye area, which are targeted with a brow lift and blepharoplasty, respectively.

Does a Mini Facelift Include a Neck Lift?

Not typically. A mini facelift focuses on the lower face and jawline. While you might see some improvement in your upper neck, the procedure isn’t designed for significant neck laxity, loose skin under the chin, excess submental fat (double chin), or vertical neck bands.

For those concerns, we may recommend a full facelift or a facelift/neck lift combination that addresses the face and neck together. Your surgeon will be upfront about what is and isn’t possible with any procedure you’re considering.  

What Are the Benefits of a Mini Facelift?

The mini facelift is great for the right patient because it:

• Minimizes signs of aging before they become prominent 
• Is a quicker procedure (typically one to two hours)
• Requires shorter incisions, which means less visible scarring
• Involves less downtime with less swelling and bruising
• Can be performed under local anesthesia with sedation
• Has a lower cost compared to a full facelift
• Produces results that look subtle and natural 

A mini facelift done well should leave you looking like a refreshed and rested version of yourself, not like someone who’s had surgery. That subtlety is the point.  

What Are the Downsides of a Mini Facelift?

A mini facelift isn’t for everyone. Your surgeon will inform you of the limitations:

• It won’t address significant neck laxity or “turkey neck.”
• It won’t improve the upper face (forehead, brows, eyelids)
• Results may not last as long as a full facelift
• Patients with more advanced aging may not achieve their desired degree of correction

None of these points means it’s a bad procedure. It’s great for some patients and not for others. The goal is to match the right procedure with the right patient. Having performed thousands of facelifts, our surgeons can tell you honestly which category you fall into.

How Long Is the Recovery Time After a Mini Facelift Procedure?

Recovery is one of the mini facelift’s biggest selling points. Most patients return to normal activities within seven to 10 days. Swelling and bruising are less pronounced than with a full facelift and resolve more quickly.

You’ll need to take it easy for two to three weeks, avoiding vigorous activity and heavy lifting. But many patients feel comfortable going out in public within a week or so. 

How Long Does a Mini Facelift Last?

Most patients enjoy their refreshed look for years. You can support the longevity of your results by leading a healthy lifestyle and taking good care of your skin.

A mini facelift doesn’t halt aging. Your face will continue to age naturally, but from a more youthful starting point. Many patients find that even years down the road, they still look better than they would have without the procedure.

Some return for a second mini facelift later. Others decide to have a full facelift as they get older. Many extend their results with nonsurgical treatments along the way.  

What Is the Best Age for a Mini Facelift?

There’s no magic number. We see mini facelift patients ranging from their late 30s to their 60s. What matters isn’t your chronological age. It’s what’s happening with your face and how you feel about those changes.

Many of our mini facelift patients are in their 40s and early 50s. They’re noticing softening along the jaw and deeper nasolabial folds, and they don’t want to wait until things progress further. They’d rather address changes now and age gracefully from a new starting point.

What Are the Best Nonsurgical Alternatives to a Mini Facelift?

If you’re not ready for surgery of any kind, there are options at our award-winning med spa that can address early facial aging:

• Dermal fillers can soften deep creases like nasolabial folds, restore lost volume and contour the jawline
• Botox and Dysport can smooth expression wrinkles and lift downturned mouth corners
• Radiofrequency microneedling can tighten, smooth and firm skin by stimulating collagen production

These treatments work well for patients with very early concerns or for extending facelift results. However, none of them replicate what surgery can accomplish. If you have enough skin laxity, nothing will be as effective as a surgical facelift.

Should I Get a Mini Facelift or a Full Facelift?

The answer depends on a few things:

Where is the laxity? If your concerns are primarily in your lower face with minimal neck involvement, the mini approach may be ideal. If loose skin extends down into your neck, a full facelift will deliver more complete results.

What’s your skin quality like? Patients with better skin elasticity tend to be stronger candidates for the mini approach. The skin bounces back more readily.

Are you interested in “prejuvenation”? Some patients prefer to address early changes rather than waiting for more significant aging to set in. A mini facelift can “lock in” your current appearance and let you age more gradually from there.

How much downtime can you manage? Mini facelift patients tend to recover faster. If you have a demanding schedule, that may be the deciding factor.

How dramatic do you want your result to be? A mini facelift refreshes. A full facelift delivers more dramatic, longer-lasting results. Neither is inherently better — it depends on what you’re hoping to achieve.
