The latest tech gives you options to dramatically improve your skin while minimizing downtime and side effects.

To ensure you get the best results, though, it’s important to know how to care for your skin post treatment! In this blog, we’ll orient you to the basics of laser skin resurfacing, then share 5 things to help you get the most out of your laser treatment.

What does laser skin resurfacing do?

Cosmetic lasers use light-based technology to improve the look of your skin in an outpatient, non-surgical procedure. They can be used to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, scars, pigmented lesions, keratoses, and uneven tone or texture. They also help to tighten the skin.

Laser treatment does carefully-controlled damage to your skin in order to take advantage of its healing mechanisms.

Laser treatments typically work by damaging skin is a highly-targeted way to stimulate the skin’s own healing and rejuvenation process. Lasers can also reach deeper layers to promote the formation of new collagen—that’s the component of your skin that gives it elasticity and keeps it plump and hydrated.

What is recovery like after laser treatment?

Laser resurfacing procedures vary widely and are finely-tuned to the individual patient’s needs, which means recovery will look different for each person.

For more mild treatments, you’ll likely experience some redness and sensitivity that will subside after only a few days. More aggressive treatments can offer dramatic results, but do require a longer recovery time, during which you may experience peeling skin as the dead outer layer is shed.

In either case, by the time two weeks have gone by you should be seeing the results in younger, healthier-looking skin.

Tips for a successful treatment

So what can you do to make sure you get the best results from your laser skin resurfacing treatment? Here are our top 5 tips.

1. Prepare for success

What you do before your treatment matters, too. One area you particularly need to watch out for is the sun. Even though it can be tempting to get outside and enjoy the weather, it’s best to avoid sun exposure for at least a week before your procedure.

You should also avoid anything that would be harsh on your skin, like chemical peels. Laser treatment makes your skin very sensitive and you don’t want to head into treatment with it already irritated.

It’s also a good idea to stay on top of hydration and healthy eating—your skin needs plenty of water and nutrients to generate more collagen and reap the full benefits of laser treatment!

Laser treatment makes your skin sensitive, and you don’t want to head into treatment with it already irritated.

2. Post treatment, focus on being gentle & clean

Laser treatment does carefully-controlled damage to your skin in order to take advantage of its healing mechanisms. You don’t want to put it under more stress as it recovers. That means treating it as gently as possible.

After your laser procedure, we will provide detailed instructions as to when you can first use cleansers and apply products. When you do, be sure to start with an extremely gentle, fragrance-free cleanser and dry your face with a newly washed towel. After cleansing, apply a mild, nourishing moisturizer that won’t irritate your skin. And definitely skip all exfoliants until your skin is fully recovered! (When you have a laser treatment here at the Swan Center, we’ll be sure to check your products and offer expert recommendations.)

When you’re ready to leave the house, you might wonder about cosmetics. We recommend starting with fresh foundation and cheek products (old products can easily harbor bacteria) and only using mineral makeup. This is also a great time to get out new brushes, or thoroughly cleanse yours, since they are often full of germs.

3. Be religious about post-treatment SPF

If it is important to avoid sun exposure before your procedure, it is even more crucial afterwards. For the initial recovery period, you’ll want to stay out of the sun entirely. If you do have to be outside, wear a broad-brimmed hat and a high-SPF sunscreen. For extra protection, we recommend you wear sunscreen inside as well, as UV rays pass through glass windows—where there is daylight, there is UV!

Even after healing is complete, you’ll want to continue to use a broad spectrum sunscreen to protect your renewed skin and help your results to last.

4. Don’t touch

After treatment, your skin’s protective layer is compromised and, as we mentioned before, it is more vulnerable to bacteria, so you’ll need to avoid touching your skin. It can be very tempting to feel your skin’s progress or disturb peeling skin, but you must resist the urge! Besides the risk of infection, scratching, rubbing, or picking can also increase irritation and inhibit healing, and even create new scars. Let your skin rest.

One other way our faces can pick up bacteria is from our smartphones, so consider giving yours regular wipe-downs with a sanitary wipe!

5. Get some sleep

What does sleep have to do with your skin? Actually, a lot. It isn’t just that sleep is important to healing in your body in general. A lack of sleep also causes stress, which leads to inflammation. Stress also raises cortisol levels in your blood, which contributes to the aging and damage of skin.

Enough sleep is also important for the production of collagen, which laser therapy is intended to stimulate.

Experts recommend 7-9 hours a night for adults; give yourself permission to get the rest you need. Your skin will thank you.

Wrinkles and fine lines are a sign of wisdom and experience, but for many of us, they appear before we are ready to embrace them. And while BOTOX and dermal fillers are the go-to methods for reducing the signs of aging, are there other options if you’d rather avoid needles? In this post, we examine some ways to treat wrinkles without injections, and how these stand up to injectable fillers and neurotoxins.

Can you treat wrinkles at home?

While at-home treatments simply can’t deliver the kind of transformation that is possible with plastic surgery or injectables, certain products can help slow the signs of aging and soften fine lines. The team at MindBodyGreen recently discussed various tactics for reducing wrinkles at home; here are our favorite ideas from their list:

SPF. You’ve surely had the importance of wearing sunscreen impressed upon you from a young age, but we’ll reiterate it here: sunscreen is one of your first and best lines of defense against wrinkles because it blocks the sun’s harmful UV rays from damaging elastin fibers in your skin.

Smart topical products. Medical-grade skincare products can further protect your skin while providing essential nutrients such as retinoids, alpha-hydroxy acids, niacinamide, anti-aging peptides, and/or growth factors. But with so many options, it’s important to consult with a medical skincare professional to help determine which products are appropriate for treating your unique skin concerns. (Working with a medical practice will also save you from wasting time and money on OTC skincare: while some products include similar nutrients, the concentrations are much lower, making it unlikely you will see any real results.) From Revision Skincare to ZO Skin Health, shop our favorite skincare products here. Our skin care specialists tailor at home regimens to fit your specific needs. We recommend a personal consultation to get you on track to proper skin health.

Supplements. When it comes to supplements, many are not medically proven; however, one supplement long-known for its ability to support skin health is vitamin C. Vitamin C helps promote collagen production and is needed for its synthesis and maintenance. Making sure you get enough vitamin C in your diet will likely improve your skin’s overall health—just make sure to choose a high-quality, trusted supplement brand.

Incorporating these at-home techniques should provide some noticeable wrinkle protection and modest reduction over time, but if you really want to see smoother, more youthful skin fast, it’s time to head to a true medspa.

At-home treatments simply can’t deliver the kind of transformation that is possible with plastic surgery or injectables, but certain products can help slow aging and soften fine lines.

How can a medspa treat wrinkles without injectables?

A true medical spa offers a variety of physician-supervised treatments designed to remove layers of dead skin cells, hydrate skin, and encourage collagen production. Here are a few of our favorite non-injectable medspa treatments for wrinkles and lines:

A HydraFacial can help you achieve softer, smoother skin in a relaxing treatment that involves zero needles or downtime. The treatment utilizes a gentle, deep-cleansing jet of water infused with nourishing antioxidant serums to exfoliate, cleanse, and finally replenish your skin’s essential nutrients. For an added rejuvenating boost, your HydraFacial can be customized to include a connective tissue growth factor designed to promote natural collagen and elastin production and help reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Unlike some skin treatments, HydraFacial is also completely safe for patients who have darker complexions, as well as for those with skin issues such as melasma.

Radiofrequency microneedling delivers high-intensity radiofrequency energy deep into your skin via an array of insulated needles. This warms the deep dermis to stimulate new collagen fiber growth and tighten skin, leading to visible skin improvements that improve over the following months. This hard-working treatment has been touted by celebrities for its ability to quickly diminish fine lines and other blemishes, like sunspots and acne scars.

Laser skin resurfacing may sound intimidating, but it’s one of the most effective methods of treating wrinkles and lines on the face and body. Laser skin resurfacing utilizes focused beams of heat and light energy to encourage newer, healthier skin growth. At The Swan Center, we use the HALO Hybrid Fractional Laser because it provides the fully rejuvenating benefits of an ablative laser but with less downtime.

What’s the best way to permanently get rid of wrinkles?

Unfortunately, short of having surgical procedures at intervals, there’s really no way to permanently remove and prevent wrinkles. However, since deep lines—like nasolabial “smile” lines—are caused in part by volume loss, dermal fillers can go a long way in reducing their appearance.

We know you are probably reading this in an effort to avoid fillers, but before you write injectables off, let’s consider the main reasons people give for wanting to avoid them:

Fear of poor results: Many people assume injectable fillers create a fake, puffy look because they have only noticed patients with poor results. Consider, however, that you’ve likely seen lots of good injectable work without realizing it—after all, most celebrities make use of them. And the truth is, retaining a completely natural look is possible: skilled injectors who understand advanced techniques consistently achieve this goal. For example, when treating the nasolabial folds, a physician who is fully versed in facial anatomy will often take an indirect approach with fillers, treating surrounding areas to naturally lift the tissues below (rather than only treating the immediate area which can lead to the “duck face” look).

Fear of needles/pain: A skilled injector will take a number of steps to reduce pain and anxiety during treatment. If this is an issue for you, talk to your provider and consider trying a minor injectable treatment first.

A perception that fillers can be harmful: While it is true that some unscrupulous providers have injected patients with harmful substances, legitimate filler products have a long history of safe use on millions of patients.

A desire to avoid “unnatural” substances: It would be easy to assume injectable fillers must be made of foreign substances, but hyaluronic acid—the key ingredient in our go-to dermal filler, Restylane—is already produced naturally in your body. Fillers simply boost the amount you have, placing it right where you most want it.

We advocate for dermal fillers because they can achieve structural appearance changes that no other non-surgical option offers. For example, plumping the cheeks with fillers will not only help reduce smile lines but also give a lifted look to your entire face, reflect more light into your eyes, and enhance your face’s symmetry.

But do I need dermal fillers to get rid of wrinkles?

There are essentially three options to choose from when it comes to fighting wrinkles:

Utilize medical-grade skincare and medspa wrinkle treatments as a way to slow aging and soften the appearance of fine lines.

Use dermal filler injections; they are the safest, most effective way to immediately reduce the appearance of wrinkles (and you can choose a completely natural hyaluronic-acid based formula).

Have a surgical lifting procedure; while surgery requires an investment of time and money, a skillfully performed facelift can treat deeper folds and wrinkles, turning back the clock about a decade.

While the most ideal long-term results ultimately come from using a combination of all of the above techniques, if you want to completely avoid fillers, we suggest being extra attentive to your skincare routine, seeking regular medspa treatments, and having a surgical procedure when skin laxity becomes more apparent.

Historically, plump, rosy cheeks were seen as a sign of health—and therefore, attractiveness—by European cultures. However, over the last half-century, prominent upper cheekbones and narrower cheeks have become universally favored, with more men and women seeking plastic surgery to contour their cheeks than ever before.

For those who don’t want to undergo a surgical procedure like buccal fat removal or cheek implants to get sculpted cheeks, injectable fillers are a great alternative. In this month’s post, we explain how you can get chiseled cheeks surgery-free with simple filler injections.

What are cheek fillers?

Cheek fillers are strategically-placed dermal filler injections that provide volume and structure in the area around and above the cheeks. These fillers are typically comprised of hyaluronic acid (HA), a naturally-occurring molecule in the human body that is responsible for absorbing water to keep your skin supple and moist. HA-based fillers not only lift and contour the cheeks but also smooth wrinkles and fine lines in the face by hydrating the skin from within.

How do cheek fillers work?

Over time, skin loses its ability to produce collagen and elastin, which can lead to a saggy, sunken-in facial appearance. When most people age, they lose volume in their mid-face & cheeks and experience skin sagging, or “jowling,” in their lower face. When carefully injected by an expert, fillers can temporarily volumize sunken areas and create symmetry in the face.

Increasing the volume around your cheekbones can create the illusion of a more defined bone structure. A skilled surgeon can use cheek fillers to control the light and shadows on your face, highlighting certain areas and using shadows to create the appearance of natural depressions. Contoured upper cheeks can also reflect light into the eyes to help you look more refreshed and invigorated.

Another added benefit of cheek fillers is that because of the filler’s moisturizing effect, you can get away with wearing less makeup, as your cheeks will take on a natural glow you’ll want to show off.

How long do cheek fillers last?

Hyaluronic acid cheek fillers typically last between 9-12 months before maintenance treatments are needed.

Which fillers are best for cheeks?

At the Swan Center, we use the Restylane line of fillers to sculpt the cheeks. Restylane is an FDA-approved HA-based filler with a safe and effective track record. Like other HA fillers, Restylane not only firms and volumizes skin, but also hydrates it from the inside out for smoother skin with fewer wrinkles and lines. Other fillers that can be used in the cheeks include Juvéderm, Radiesse, Sculptra Aesthetic, and Bellafill.

Cheek fillers are customizable

Everyone’s facial anatomy is unique, and at The Swan Center, our goal is to bring out this individualized beauty in each of our patients. Cheek fillers are a wonderful way we are able to achieve this because they are highly customizable. Here are a few ways we can adapt cheek fillers to enhance your face.

For patients with a rounder face:

While filler can’t reduce volume in your face, it can make the lower cheeks appear slimmer by volumizing the upper cheeks. This will also elevate the mid-face for a more lifted and elongated facial appearance (think Demi Moore circa 2011).

For patients with a narrower face:

Filler injections to the mid-face and lower cheeks can help fill out the face for a healthy, youthful appearance (think Jennifer Lawrence in the first Hunger Games film).

Cheek fillers are quick and easy

Cheek fillers are done in-office in under 15 minutes. The HA begins to volumize and hydrate skin immediately, so you’ll begin to notice results as soon as you leave the office. Even better, because Restylane increases collagen and elastin production in your skin, you’ll see your skin tone improve over the following months.

Cheek fillers have zero recovery period, and, when performed with Restylane injections, last for up to 12 months.

Cheek fillers are a worry-free procedure. If for any reason you aren’t completely satisfied with your results, your surgeon can inject hyaluronidase, an enzyme that breaks down HA, to reverse your filler. Or, if you’ve had a less-than-ideal filler experience elsewhere, our expert plastic surgeons can use hyaluronidase to return your face to its natural state and work with you on achieving the results you want.

How can I enhance my cheek fillers?

Looking to highlight your newly-enhanced cheeks? Here are a few of our favorite methods.

Dermal fillers in other parts of the face. Adding a few filler injections to other areas of the face can create symmetry and full-facial rejuvenation while drawing attention to your cheeks. Lip fillers can provide a subtle enhancement to the natural shape of the lips and smooth their texture; jawline fillers can make the jaw appear stronger, thinner, and more angled; under-eye fillers can fill in the sunken hollows between the cheeks and eyes for a more alert appearance.

Botox & Dysport injections. Neurotoxin injections like Botox and Dysport can fix a gummy smile, create a subtle lip flip, and soften the brow. When paired with cheek filler, well-placed neurotoxin injections can improve your appearance by helping you look more relaxed and refreshed.

HydraFacial. HydraFacial is one of our most popular skincare treatments. It uses a patented medical-grade hydradermabrasion device to cleanse, exfoliate, and hydrate the face with protective serums. HydraFacial treats acne, sun damage, dark spots, and even fine lines. A HydraFacial can help to perfect your complexion to highlight your chiseled cheeks.

Laser peel. For those looking to treat skin at a deeper level, a laser peel allows us to treat wrinkles, scars, and lesions while tightening skin for glowing results after just one treatment.

Unfortunately, along with the increased attention being given to vaginal rejuvenation, there has been much misconstrued speculation—and some outright false information—about why more women are seeking these types of procedures.

The Cosmetic Surgery Times recently addressed some of the most common misconceptions surrounding vaginal rejuvenation.

Myth 1: Women undergo vaginal rejuvenation because they want to be more attractive to men.

Some skeptics believe that the reason for the surge in vaginal rejuvenation procedures is that some men have unrealistic ideals for how a woman’s genitals should look, and as a result women feel pressure to change their bodies.

Busted:

Women request vaginal rejuvenation to relieve discomfort or other physical issues more often than they do to improve aesthetics. Doctors who actually perform feminine rejuvenation procedures, like ThermiVa or the O-Shot emphasize that the trend is being driven primarily by women’s own desires to restore their bodies. Additionally, the introduction of new, non-surgical options to restore vaginal tissues has greatly increased demand as women who have been suffering for years realize they can get help in this area without surgery or downtime.

Myth 2: Women aren’t as affected by matters of sex and aging.

A common misconception is that women do not share the same level of concern about their sexual health as men do, and they are less interested in how aging changes their sexual health.

Busted:

Women tend to be more discreet than men about their sexual health, but that doesn’t mean that they don’t care. Vaginal dryness, loosened tissues, and inability to reach orgasm can be emotionally and physically painful, and now that there are proven ways to help resolve these issues, many women are all for it!

Myth 3: Women are becoming excessively vain about their “lady parts”

Another assumption is that feminine rejuvenation is on the rise because women are overly concerned about having an “ideal” vagina. Some have even claimed that the female genitals should be off-limits when it comes to cosmetic surgery.

Busted:

Many women undergo vaginal rejuvenation because of a variety of conditions that can not only can be physically painful but also embarrassing to live with. Vaginal looseness, large labia that rub and chafe against clothing, and incontinence are just a few examples as to why women decide to have vaginal rejuvenation procedures. Even if a woman’s goals are partially or solely cosmetic, it is her personal right to seek a procedure, and a decision to be made between patient and surgeon.

Myth 4: Surgery is the only way to address dissatisfaction with vaginal tissues

A lot of patients believe that labiaplasty is the only option to restore a more symmetrical look and improve comfort in the genital region, and there is little they can do to address loose internal tissues.

Busted:

For those who are wary of surgery, there are new non-surgical treatments that are quickly gaining popularity as a solution to many common concerns & medical conditions—ThermiVa® and the O-Shot®.

ThermiVa is an in-office treatment using thermal energy technology that can help improve sexual experiences, alleviate vaginal dryness, reduce incontinence, and restore a tighter appearance without downtime.

The O-Shot is an injection treatment to help correct sexual dysfunction, enhance your sexual experience, and improve the external appearance of your unique anatomy

Truth be Told…

It is important that we start talking about feminine rejuvenation and stop shaming women who want to be more comfortable in their bodies. Whether you have significant issues that need to be addressed with surgery, or more minor needs that can be improved through non-surgical treatment, our board certified plastic surgeons in Atlanta can help.

Today there are more ways than ever to address cosmetic concerns. Non-surgical procedures are increasingly popular, and new non-invasive treatments are being developed each year. However, the level of invasiveness for treatments varies and the terms used to describe how they work can be confusing.

Here at the Swan Center, we’ve helped thousands of Atlanta plastic surgery patients navigate the wide range of available treatments and procedures.

We put together the following guide to help you understand the level of invasiveness for various treatment types, and what effect they may have on your busy lifestyle.

What’s an invasive procedure?

The term invasive is typically used to describe surgical procedures that require incisions and appreciably alter skin or underlying tissues at the time of the procedure. As such, this class of procedures requires bed rest for a few days up to a few weeks. Surgical procedures usually include the option for general anesthesia or local anesthesia with IV sedation.

Examples of common invasive plastic surgery procedures:

Rhinoplasty (nose enhancement or repair)

Breast augmentation (placement of breast implants)

Facelift surgery (improvement of sagging skin on lower face and neck)

Liposuction (fat reduction)

Total healing time: Two to six months, depending on the procedure, with patient rest averaging one to two weeks.

Results: Varies between one to six months.

The risks involved with invasive plastic surgery procedures are usually greater than non-invasive options. However, these procedures are particularly effective at delivering results and are considered safe when performed by a board certified plastic surgeon.

So, what does minimally invasive mean?

Minimally invasive treatments require significantly less or no downtime and very little discomfort, but often involve a puncture or even a small incision. Minimally invasive procedures are considered less risky than other methods and do not require general anesthesia.

Examples of common minimally invasive options:

Dysport®, Restylane®, and dermal fillers (injectable treatments)

Skin procedures such as scar revision or dermaplaning

Deep skin peels

Healing time: Zero to ten days, with patient returning to work immediately or within a few days.

Results: Varies between a few days to two weeks.

These cosmetic treatments are growing in popularity because patients can return to normal activities quickly, the risk of infection or complication is low, and the results can be impressive.

What about non-surgical options?

Non-surgical cosmetic treatments involve no needles, no punctures, and no anesthesia. Foreign objects do not enter your body at any time and the entire cosmetic treatment is done externally.

These types of treatments typically involve very little downtime, with patients being able to resume unrestricted normal activity very quickly after treatment. Non-surgical treatments may occasionally be considered invasive on some level, depending on how they affect both the treatment area and underlying tissues.

Examples of common non-surgical treatments:

Laser treatments (such as fractional skin resurfacing or hair removal)

Light chemical peels

Healing time: Anywhere between one day to two weeks, with patient typically feeling and looking back to normal within a few days.

Results: Varies between one week to three months.

Non-invasive treatments

Many skincare treatments are considered non-invasive because they do not puncture the skin or otherwise impact the underlying tissues. These treatments are quite comfortable and often relaxing. There is no downtime whatsoever.

Examples of common non-invasive treatments:

Facials (to improve quality of skin through cleansing, exfoliation, & hydration)

Medical-grade skincare (products used at home or applied professionally to improve skin)

Healing time: Usually minimal, with patient resuming normal activity immediately

Results: Typically, results can be seen immediately or within a few days

Non-invasive treatments are especially effective when used in conjunction with other procedures. Be sure to ask which treatment combinations are most appropriate for your skin type and goals.

How do I know what’s right for me?

We hope we’ve cleared up some of your questions here, but the best way to learn about effective cosmetic treatments is to talk to a trusted professional. Our board certified surgeons and skincare experts can guide you through the process and help you determine which treatments are a good fit for you.

The Swan Center offers private consultations for potential patients.
