<p>An important player in whether or not your body feels stressed is the hormone <b>cortisol</b>, a naturally occurring steroid. Sound familiar? That’s because cortisol is produced in response to stress and activates our “fight or flight” instincts. <a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/stress-management/in-depth/stress/art-20046037" target="_blank" rel="noopener">According to the Mayo Clinic</a>, cortisol also “curbs functions that would be nonessential or harmful in a fight-or-flight situation.” Unfortunately, this includes lowering your body’s natural production of hyaluronic acid and collagen, key substances for keeping the skin plump and hydrated. Without an adequate supply of them, your skin thins and appears to age faster. Furthermore, high cortisol levels limit your body’s ability to fight internal inflammation and heal itself.</p>

However, a great amount of the stress that we feel is not caused by the stressor itself, but how we deal with that stressor. Doing yoga in the morning won’t end the world’s problems, but it will help you have the energy and health to be present for yourself and those around you.</p>
<p>Here are three ways to lower stress in your life, which can lead to healthier skin and a healthier you:</p>
<h3>1. Exercise</h3>
<p>Exercise increases antioxidants and lowers those damaging cortisol levels. Medical professionals everywhere recommend 30 minutes to an hour of exercise per day.</p>
<p>The <a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/stress-management/in-depth/exercise-and-stress/art-20044469" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Mayo Clinic</a> heartily acknowledges the stress-reducing effects of exercise. With regular exercise you get an increase in endorphins, which helps your body learn to manage the fight or flight response, while also improving your overall physical and mental health.</p>
<h3>2. Mindfully relax</h3>
<p>Meditation has a myriad of beneficial effects to help you reduce and control stress. In fact, two recent studies suggest that simply changing the <i>timing</i> of your coffee and breakfast can have a big influence on the efficiency of your workout. Here’s what you need to know.</p>
<h2>Have your morning coffee <i>before</i> your workout.</h2>
<p>Studies have already established that caffeine is helpful for your <a href="https://bjsm.bmj.com/content/54/11/681" target="_blank" rel="noopener">exercise performance</a>, helping you run for a longer time and do more reps in the weight room. But researchers recently looked at whether or not those gains in performance translate to better fat burning. Here are the major takeaways from the study:</p>

<li>Study participants drank the equivalent of a “strong cup of coffee” about 30 minutes before starting their morning and afternoon workouts.</li>
<li>Compared with those who drank a non-caffeinated beverage, <b>those who had coffee before morning or afternoon workouts had more efficient workouts and burned more fat.</b></li>
<li>If you want an even bigger difference, try drinking your coffee before an <i>afternoon</i> workout. Researchers found that coffee consumed before afternoon workouts made those <i>even more efficient</i> than the coffee-fueled morning workouts.</li>

<p>If you’re already drinking coffee, the tweak is easy: just treat yourself at your favorite coffee shop on the way to the gym, or make time at home to slowly enjoy your cup of joe before gym time. Just be careful with your drink selection or how much sugar you add to your cup, as <a href="https://www.health.harvard.edu/heart-health/the-sweet-danger-of-sugar" target="_blank" rel="noopener">too much sugar</a> can easily sabotage your progress! Black coffee, an Americano, or a shot or two of espresso will give you these benefits with nearly zero calories.</p>

<blockquote><p>For those trying to make the most of their morning cardio, putting off breakfast is one meaningful tweak that’s simple to make.</p></blockquote>
<p>Turns out that this bit of oft-repeated wisdom has merit: new research supports waiting to eat breakfast <i>after</i> your morning workout for more efficient exercise. Here are the major takeaways from the study:</p>

<li>The study closely monitored a group of men, all overweight, who followed a moderate-intensity exercise regimen over the course of six weeks.</li>
<li>Researchers found that <b>those who waited to eat breakfast after hitting the gym had better exercise</b> compared with those who ate breakfast before exercise. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">While pool days and sun rays are the perfect way to relax, long periods spent in the sun can be fatiguing, and often more dangerous than you think. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Less common than self-tanners, tinted dry oil is the most hydrating way to get a beautiful color for the summer. Although shorter-lasting than self-tanner, dry oils contain shimmering mica-based gold particles that leave your skin glistening. These particles are eco-friendly, so you can feel confident </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">and </span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">environmentally conscious. Tinted oils work best when applied on dry skin. Using a</span> circular motion, this shiny serum can be smoothly applied to areas like shoulder blades and arms.</p>
<h2>Homemade Cocoa Powder &amp; Cream</h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">There’s nothing sweeter than saving money by making your own cocoa powder and cream concoction. With natural ingredients, this homemade tinted lotion is a great way to smell good, look good, and feel good. Start by blending cocoa powder with your favorite lotion or cream.
