Plastic Surgery with a Woman’s Perspective: Dr. Amy Alderman
“Who says talking to your plastic surgeon can’t be like talking to your best friend…”
Dr. Amy Alderman is a nationally known, board certified plastic surgeon who provides a unique perspective to patient care by being a female surgeon and also a mother of two children. Each surgical plan is individually tailored to patients’ needs and lifestyles and is aimed at enhancing her patients’ natural beauty and restoring their confidence.
She understands that patients may vary in their cosmetic desires depending on their stage of life. For example, a young high school student may feel uncomfortable about an overly large breast size; a college senior may feel that her breasts are disproportionately small compared to her body frame; a mom may feel deflated in her breasts and frustrated in the appearance of her abdomen despite significant efforts at the gym; the professional woman may want a subtle change that does not draw attention in the workplace; and the more mature patient may desire very natural facial rejuvenation that does not result in a drastic change in her appearance.
Dr. Alderman spends a significant amount of time listening to her patients so that she can understand each patient’s personal and social situation, desires and concerns so that the most individualized surgical plan can be formulated. Not surprisingly, she has been awarded Jezebel’s Best Body Contouring Surgeon of Atlanta and Vitals Compassionate Doctor Award.
About Dr. Alderman
Dr. Alderman is from Tuscaloosa, AL and graduated Phi Beta Kappa, Summa Cum Laude and Academic All-American in tennis at Birmingham-Southern College. She went on to graduate valedictorian of her medical school class at the University of Alabama-Birmingham School of Medicine and received early membership into the national medical honor society Alpha Omega Alpha. Dr. Alderman completed her plastic surgery residency at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, and during her training, she was accepted into the prestigious Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars fellowship whereby she received training in health services research and earned a Masters in Public Health. This additional training gave Dr. Alderman the background to incorporate surgical outcomes research and patient safety initiatives into her surgical practice.
After her training, Dr. Alderman was invited to join the teaching staff at the University of Michigan, which has one of the largest plastic surgery training programs in the U.S. She was promoted to tenured Associate Professor of Plastic Surgery and served as the Director of the Cosmetic Center for Plastic Surgery. During her six years on staff at the University of Michigan, Dr. Alderman’s clinical practice focused on breast reconstruction and cosmetic surgery. Her clinical research was dedicated to improving women’s access to reconstructive breast surgery, improving surgical outcomes, and patient safety. In 2014, Dr. Alderman’s research efforts were recognized by the Plastic Surgery Foundation whereby she received the national award for Outstanding Achievement in Plastic Surgery Research.
Dr. Alderman moved to Atlanta, GA in 2010 to be closer to family and spend more time with her two children. However, she continues to contribute to her specialty.
Dr. Alderman has been recognized by her colleagues as a leader in cosmetic and breast surgery and is asked frequently to give lectures at national meetings. In 2014 alone, she gave an instructional course on breast augmentation at the national American Society of Plastic Surgeons meeting and spoke at six other professional meetings on topics ranging from breast augmentation, breast reduction, breast implants and patient safety. She has given over 100 presentations, has published over 70 articles, and has contributed to over 10 textbooks. In addition, she is a frequent oral examiner for the American Board of Plastic Surgery, past president of the University of Michigan Plastic Surgery Alumni Association, current treasurer of the Georgia Society of Plastic Surgeons, board member for the National Accreditation for Breast Centers and Vice Chairperson for the American Society of Plastic Surgeons Education Aesthetic Council.
