Plastic Surgery with a Woman’s Perspective: Dr. Amy Alderman
Dr. Amy Alderman, is a nationally known, board certified, female plastic surgeon. She approaches each surgery individually to enhance each patient’s natural beauty and to help restore confidence. Dr. Alderman is known for educating all of her patients on all available options to address concerns and develop individualized action plans to achieve natural appearing results. It is through education that patients are able to make decisions about their own surgery. She believes this is the foundation of a mutual trust and respect; it’s also an important step in building meaningful, long-lasting relationships. Dr. Alderman has an evident commitment to patient care and safety which can be attributed to her years of education, professional experience, and participation in national patient safety initiatives.
Dr. Alderman graduated Phi Beta Kappa, Summa Cum Laude and Academic All-American in tennis at Birmingham-Southern College. She went on to graduate valedictorian of her medical school class at the University of Alabama-Birmingham School of Medicine. She also received several honors including early membership into Alpha Omega Alpha, the National Medical Honor Society. Dr. Alderman completed her Plastic Surgery Residency at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. While training, she also earned a Masters in Public Health and was admitted into the exclusive Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program. This program allowed Dr. Alderman to develop the background needed to become so heavily involved in surgical outcomes research and patient safety initiatives.
After surgical training, Dr. Alderman then joined the teaching staff at the University of Michigan. She was promoted to tenured Associate Professor of Plastic Surgery, and she served as the Director for the University’s Cosmetic Surgery Program. At the University of Michigan, breast reconstruction and plastic surgery was her focus. Along with the focus on breast reconstruction, she was a highly accomplished researcher in breast surgery. Through these dedicated areas of interest she received grant funding from The National Cancer Institute, The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Plastic Surgery Educational Foundation.
In July 2011, Dr. Alderman was featured in The American Society of PlasticSurgeon‘s bi-monthly publication, “Plastic Surgery News.” This publication introduces the newest discoveries in plastic surgery, explains new trends and spotlights surgeons and practices. “Plastic Surgery News” chose Dr. Amy Alderman, M.D., F.A.C.S, M.P.H. as their highlighted plastic surgeon. This was an honor to be featured in such an industry publication, and the article is available her in full. [PDF]

A Woman’s Perspective
“I feel as if I share my female patients’ perspective. I hope that as a female plastic surgeon I am able to be empathetic during consultation, to truly understand each patient’s desires. I know how one’s confidence can improve following excellent surgery results, and I strive for those beautiful natural results that make patients’ so happy afterward.”
Of the people interested in plastic surgery 91% are female. I am female, and I have the same issues with keeping fit and with aging. So I understand how the women want to look youthful. This doesn’t mean all women want to look 20, but we all want to look great for our age. We want our outside to reflect how beautiful and alive and intelligent we are.”
