Implants Overview

Different Types of Breast Implants

Today, there are three different general types of breast implants available to women. At our practice, we offer all three. With three types of implants available, patients have more options to ensure beautiful surgical results and to help achieve each individual’s aesthetic goals.

Saline Breast Implants

Saline implants offer women an augmentation using a silicone shell that is filled with saline, a sterile saltwater solution. This option offers greater flexibility with surgical incisions and placement.

Saline implants are filled after insertion, allowing for the smallest incisions of all the implant options. With saline implants, patients with very little breast tissue sometimes complain they can see or feel wrinkling or the ridge of the implant shell as there is very little camouflage even with implants placed below the muscle.

In case of an implant rupture, the sterile saline solution is absorbed by your body since your body is mostly 2/3 water as well. You will more than likely notice the rupture more quickly with the sudden deflation in breast size.

Saline implants are available to women 18 years and older. Implant manufactures provide you with a lifetime warranty that their saline product is free of defect.

Silicone Breast Implants

Silicone implants have been available since 2005. These implants are manufactured using a silicone shell filled with a silicone gel. Many patients consider silicone implants to have the most natural feel, more closely resembling your own body fat or tissue. Some would say closer to your own natural breast tissue.

Silicone implants can give a fuller, more natural appearance as the silicone material lies more naturally against the body. They are filled directly by the manufacturer, so the incision must accommodate insertion. Silicone implants typically require a slightly larger incision than saline implants, but can certainly be hidden. Incisions site and placement are dependent on the individuality of each patient and based on your discussions in your consultation with your board certified plastic surgeon.

Silicone implants have a slightly less risk of wrinkling or folding. Although chances are slight if there is in fact an implant rupture, the silicone gel solution leaks slowly, and you may not notice any changes as the silicone stays within the capsule or pocket created during your surgery. These changes are typically noticed upon mammogram, ultrasound or MRI and the current FDA recommendations are for patients to undergo regular MRIs to monitor for these ruptures. Implant manufactures provide you with a lifetime warranty that their silicone product is free of defect.

Ultra Cohesive Breast Implants

Ultra cohesive gel breast implants are newest FDA approved type of breast implant with approval beginning in 2012. These implants are manufactured using a silicone shell filled with a silicone gel that is ultra cohesive.

The silicone used in these implants is more coined as “form stable.” It retains its shape and has the consistency of a gummy bear type candy. (These implants are often referred to as “gummy bear implants.”) These usually require a slightly larger incision, which is easily hidden in the fold of the breast.

Ultra cohesive gel implants give a more natural shape as these come from the manufacturer pre-formed in a teardrop shape or also referred to as memory shape. These are a more denser type silicone and have a somewhat firmer feel. Ultra cohesive implants have a very low capsular contracture rate, and in case of a tear or rupture, the more solid cohesive gel will also remain in the breast capsule or pocket. Implant manufactures provide you with a lifetime warranty that their ultra cohesive silicone product is free of defect.
