Breast Enlargements From Expert Doctors

Women who desire larger breasts may wish to have a breast enlargement (augmentation) procedure. Breast augmentation may also be indicated for women who have one breast that is noticeably smaller than the other (breast asymmetry).

Breast augmentation is intended to create larger and more shapely breasts. Many woman report an improved self-image as a result of breast enlargement. However, there is no one-size-fits-all solution to breast size. Dr. Bauer, Dr. Fardo, and Dr. Connors work closely with their patients to help determine the size, shape, and type (silicone or saline) of breast implant that is best for each woman's body. Every woman is unique, and so careful consideration must be given to each woman's body frame and desired outcome before surgery is performed.

An incision is made either underneath the breast just above the crease, around the lower edge of the areola (the pigmented area surrounding the nipple), or in the armpit. Dr. Bauer, Dr. Fardo, or Dr. Connors will discuss incision options with you and help you make an informed decision about the incision placement that is best for you.

Breast enlargement is performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia. A small incision is made and a saline or silicone gel breast implant is inserted under the breast tissue or under the breast tissue and the underlying muscle.

After surgery, you will go home in an elastic bra. The bra helps hold the breasts in the correct position. Initial discomfort is easily controlled with oral medication. Sutures are usually removed in 7 to 12 days. Light activities can be resumed as tolerated, and aerobic activities can be started in about 3 weeks. Moving or sliding the implants within the breast pockets during the postoperative period may reduce the frequency of wrinkling.

An additional procedure that would enhance the result of a breast augmentation is a Mastopexy (breast lift) - if the breasts are loose or saggy in addition to being small. This is especially common after pregnancy or breast feeding, or as a result of the aging process. Women who have lost significant weight also may be candidates for a combination of breast lift with enlargement surgery.

Breast enlargement is considered cosmetic and therefore is not covered by insurance. The patient is responsible for payment.

The specific risks and the suitability of breast augmentation for a given individual can be determined only at the time of consultation. All surgical procedures have some degree of risk. Minor complications that do not affect the outcome occur occasionally. Major complications are unusual.
